Darrell Griffin Obituary

GRIFFIN Major Darrell Edward Griffin, Jr., retired career officer of the U.S. Army, passed away on Monday, March 20, 2006 at the age of 83 after a long illness. Major Griffin served his country during and after World War II in the Philippines, Japan, Alaska, Korea, Germany, and United States until his retirement. Following his military career, he taught at Delgado Community College retiring as Professor of Architectural Engineering and Director of Facility Planning and spent countless hours assisting at the German Seamen's Mission in New Orleans. He graduated from Texas A&M, Class of '44 and from Alcee Fortier High School in New Orleans. Beloved husband of Jane Crane Christopher Griffin, and by previous marriage the late Dorothy Pogemiller Griffin, he was devoted father of Nancy Griffin-Dittli and Darrell E. Griffin, III; step-father of James M. Christopher, Capt. Irvin W. Christopher (USNR), Donna M. Christopher, Keith W. Christopher, and Lista C. Hank, and was proud grandfather of Frederike Dorothy Dittli, William Edward Griffin, Katherine Marie Griffin, Zoe Elizabeth Christopher and Ariel Grace Christopher. He was son of the late Capt. Darrell E. Griffin and the late Louise K. Griffin and brother of Charles Griffin. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a gathering and Memorial Service on May 15th at 6:00p.m. at The Village Lutheran Church, 29180 Highway 190, Lacombe, LA 70445 with Dr. Edgar Homrighausen, Pastor officiating assisted by Rev. Heinz R. Neumann, Chaplain of the German Seamen's Mission. A military burial will take place on Wednesday, May 17th in the National Cemetery at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation, The Village Lutheran Church, or the German Seamen's Mission.
