Our dear Louise, Sorry to have missed Donnie's service as we've been out of town all weekend. Such a sweetheart and a joy to hug! And we know your times with your best friend were rich and absolutely FUN. Donnie always made us feel like we were the number one people in his life as he did with everyone he met! Never judgmental; always happy even through his illness. What an outstanding man! The true Mayor!! Much love from both of us, Kim and Zab. ❤

Don and I were fellow C.G. Auxiliarists for 20 years. It was my privilege to help guide his retirement from the Coast Guard Auxiliary on one of our monthly meetings when I was Flotilla Commander and to highlight his vast experience and gentle nature especially when talking about safety and risk management issues. He gave great thought before speaking and commenting on areas of his expertise. One could hear his mind thinking whenever an issue came up within his area of responsibility. Being multi talented and willing to take on different leadership areas in our local Flotilla in Baton Rouge, he always was meticulous in doing a great job.
Having visited with him in his BREC office, he gave the same passion and carefulness there as I listened to his thoughts on tasks he was responsible for. What a privilege to have known Don and his wife.

For Donnie. He was a cousin who I loved. Some of my earliest childhood memories of him and my other Steadman cousins swimming, running around in the woods.
My heartfelt sympathy to Lou and my cousins. This went down quickly and hurts.
I can hear his laughter in my head.

To Louise, Darryl, and Sean
I can only describe Don as a gentle soul. When we were "stupid" kids, acting foolishly in high school I remember Don as one of the cooler heads. Boys, your dad was a special man. Good men like him don't come along that often. I so much enjoyed the 50th reunion that Don organized. Louise, my prayers are for you and the boys. As Catholics, we are not known for memorizing bible verses and I must confess I only know two. Romans 8:38 is my favorite. In 1981 I attended a Cursillo retreat weekend and after that retreat I was devouring scripture. A priest friend gave me a book titled "St. Paul, Apostle to the Gentiles". I was blown away by the life of St. Paul and what a tough, soldier for Christ he was. When I read Romans 8:38 for the first time I was stopped in my tracks because this tough, never quite guy St. Pauls starts it off with three words "I am convinced". When St. Paul is convinced of something, I want to know what that is. That verse has provided me so much hope because nothing can separate us from the love of God if we hang on to Christ. Love to all ----- Caire Boe '67

Very hurt to hear of Don's passing. I worked with him for around 10 years at BREC. He always made me feel important and a welcomed part of the BREC family. He made me laugh all the time and I miss his stories about boating or vacations that he shared with me. He was a great Risk Manager for BREC and an even better human being. He will be missed. I send condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time.

When you work with someone like Don, you came to enjoy his story telling... he had a tremendous sense of humor and really drew you into the story. You always had time for Don.

In a few instances he would be serious, it came with the jobs we had to do; but in the end he always wanted to leave the effort with some type of bond. Relationships were important to him, which meant the individual was important. That is why I considered him more a friend than a co-worker.

I am genuinely sadden that he has passed, there is something missing today. But I consider it worth the pain knowing he made my life a bit more enjoyable. He was old school in a lot ways, and that is one of the main reasons you liked him. It will be easy to miss him.

For me, it's a lifetime of memories as I can not remember a time when he was not a part of my life. What I will never forget is the way he would tell a funny story, his laugh, his quick come back to something I said....that I thought would stump him and the "cement inter tube"...that was a rich historical memory right there and one that some , who were there, will never forget either.
While Donnie and I did not share DNA, make no mistake, He was my brother! He was there for me and my sisters when our two brothers died...he stepped in and took over the role of looking after us in a brotherly way. In good times and bad, he was ALWAYS AND I MEAN ALWAYS there for us. He and Lou even made a trek up to Alexandria for my birthday....a day that had been plagued with the deaths of my Mother and Grandfather years prior. They knew what that day was like for me and made it their mission to overcome the sad thoughts with happy ones. Mission Accomplished.
Donnie has been a better friend and brother to me than I deserve and I can honestly say, in the last few years of me struggling with my personal battles...it seemed I hurt him and I will never forget that. It burdens my heart to know that I ever caused him pain as all he ever did or wanted from me was love. While I did love him, I failed to show it when it mattered to him...even if I didn't know of it at the time, when I found out I did not act promptly as I should. He still forgave me and for that I am grateful.
It's hard to imagine a world without that smile and infectious laugh...and bear hugs. Plenty of bear hugs! Aside from my DNA brothers, he is the best brother a girl could have...he is irreplaceable in my heart. I thank God for the 57+ years of memories I have of him being in my life.

The song that correlates with my brother Dutch's passing is: "He ain't heavy, he's my brother" correlates with Donnie as well....I love you my brother, my friend, my mentor...rest high on that mountain...until we meet again

To Mrs. Louise (Lou),

We were so sorry to hear of Don's passing and we want to express our most sincere sympathies to you and the family during this difficult time. Don was a highly valuable and respected member of our team and the effects of his passing are already being felt here by the staff. For those of us that had the privilege of calling him "friend" outside of work, we were humbled by his kind-heartedness and compassion to everyone around him.

Don was a wonderful employee who understood the meaning of the word "team." He was always more focused on the good of the organization and the department than on his own benefit. He made many great contributions to BREC and helped it move forward in numerous ways. His work here will never be forgotten. We will always remember his smile, sense of humor and his blue suede shoes.

Know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and his family and friends during this difficult time.

With sincere sympathy,
The Department of Human Resources and staff of the Recreation and Park Commission
