Doreen Bishop Obituary

Doreen Ilona Meyers Bishop (73) died Saturday, March 5, 2022, in Heart of Hospice after a month-long hospitalization in East Jefferson General Hospital. She was born in Perth Amboy, NJ, and lived in Woodbridge Township, NJ, during her childhood. She attended and graduated from the Vail Dean School in 1966. She attended and graduated from Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio, in 1970, with a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy. She attended graduate school for Philosophy at Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI, before changing career goals in 1973, and pursuing a BSN (1977) in Nursing and MSN (1980) from Rutgers University, as well as an RN and APN licensure. Mrs. Bishop specialized in psychiatric nursing, and during her thirty-year career, she worked in several hospitals and an outpatient psychiatric clinic in New Jersey. Doreen Bishop was the much-loved wife of Darrell Bishop, with whom she shared 49 years of marriage (July 2, 1973), and 50 years of companionship, laughter, and love. In 1982, the Bishops welcomed their beloved daughter, Emily. Mrs. Bishop loved motherhood and took a three-year break from employment to be a stay-at-home parent to Emily. In 2014, the Bishops relocated from New Jersey to New Orleans, LA to be closer to Emily-a professor at Loyola University New Orleans College of Law-and her family. Mrs. Bishop is survived by her husband, Darrell Bishop; her daughter, Emily Bishop; her son-in-law, Kevin Leftwich; and her grandsons, James Leftwich and Henry Leftwich, all of New Orleans. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Bev Bishop of Westminster, CO; her sister of the heart and long-time best friend since 1966, Arlene McAuley of Barrington, RI; and her treasured friend, Maryanne Minishcetti, Ph.D., of Somerset, NJ. On March 12, 2022, the family will receive friends and family from 9:00 a.m. until 11 a.m. at Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home; a funeral service will begin in the J. Garic Schoen Chapel at 11 a.m. For those unable to attend you may view the service by visiting www.schoenfh.com and clicking the link in the obituary. A private interment for the family will follow at St. Louis Cemetery No. 3 in New Orleans. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Second Harvest Food Bank, 700 Edwards Ave., New Orleans, LA 70123; https://no-hunger.org/.

Doreen was my cousin, her mother and my father were siblings. My condolences to your family.

I have not seen you since 1966 when I entered the service. I am saddened hearing of your passing. I spoke with you probably 35 plus years ago when you lived in New Jersey and your Mother gave me you phone number. The only thing I have are three letters you wrote to me while I was in the service. I have a Vail Dean High School Year Book picture of you. Web. use to get together with the girls you graduated with at Vail Dean School in Elizabeth, New Jersey ... good times I will remember. Sorry this is late notice but I was doing my Ancestry stuff today 7 July 2024 and your name popped up. God Bless and Rest Easy and many condolences to Darrell and Emily and the Family.
