Elva Marks Obituary

MARKS Elva Gaille Marks passed away on Thursday morning, September 4, 2008, at the age of 91. Beloved wife of the late Philip W. Marks, Jr., she is survived by her brothers Gordon and Richard Gaille; her sons, Donald (and wife Martha) and Philip III (and wife Stephanie); four grandchildren, Donald Jr. (wife Jennifer), Wade, Philip IV, and Alexandra; and one great grandchild, Albert Joseph. Mrs. Marks was a life-long resident of New Orleans and had a long and distinguished career as a teacher and principal in the Orleans Parish Public School System after graduating from Newcomb College. She later received a master's degree in education from Loyola University in New Orleans. Elva was a member of the Gentilly Presbyterian Church, and was active in and served as president of the Gentilly Women's Club. In retirement, Elva served as a volunteer at the New Orleans Museum of Art. As with many life-long New Orleanians, hurricane Katrina took her house and broke her heart. A private funeral service will be held on September 9, 2008 at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Friends of City Park or the New Orleans Museum of Art. Just a note from a former student who found inspiration in Mrs. Marks' leadership qualities as assistant principal (especially after a good scolding) and she will be fondly remembered by the John McDonogh class of 1961

My condolences to Mrs. Marks family. I was very saddened when I saw her obit in today's paper. I am a grad of John McDonogh Sr. High, class of 1958 and helped Mrs. Marks in her office during my study periods. She was very influential to me and gave me great guidance. I missed her very much after I graduated. I know she is resting peacefully as she was a great person.
