Emmett helped our parents in their old age, most of all. he took them on vacations, visited often, and brought them many needed items. He was my older brother hero. He is always in my heart, with beautiful memories.

Growing up with the Guderian family (Prissy and I are first-grade friends) remains one of the highlights if my childhood. I had only a sister seven years my junior and part of a whole different world than mine, so being the silent witness to the big family “thing” was a fascinating experience for me. The family gathered for dinner and what the conversations were about I have no recollection, but they were guaranteed to be lively! After dinner, the dishes were done, most often by Priss and me (no dishwasher) and all of us went to our “space” to finish homework, or just to do what kids used to do before 24 hour TV. Final call before “lights out” was for saying the Rosary as a family. Those remain some of the most precious memories of my growing up. Seems as if there was generally a toddler or baby around adding levity to the quiet, prayerful time. In as much as the Guderian’s were my second family, Emmett and Gwen were my other parents. My feeling of closeness to them has remained strong through the years. Before he moved to New Orleans, Emmett and I would enjoy lunch together often, always a treat for me since we would reminisce about events which we’d shared (Priss’s and my frantic insistence that he go out in the middle of a hurricane to locate and retrieve the current mama cat and her kittens—and he did! He also graciously salvaged our attempts at drawing the riverboat backdrop for our prom!) Good grief—I could go on and on with “Emmett saves” for there were many. But there’s not enough space for such wonderful Emmett stories!
I will miss him and love him dearly as I have missed and love I’m “other mother” Gwen. Theirs was a family, friendship, and love I was privileged to share and these memories shall remain with me until I can share them first hand again.
