Eugene Elton Butler Sr.

Eugene Elton Butler, Sr. was born January 1924 to Joseph Paul Butler, Sr. and Beulah Gibson Butler of Violet, LA. He was raised by his father and Rose Taylor Butler (stepmother) who all preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by first wife - Audrey Snia Butler, second wife - Thelma Moore Butler, son - Eugene Jr., and daughter - Sonia Elaine Butler. He leaves behind loving sons and daughters - Joel Butler of New Orleans, Louisiana; David E. Butler of Austin, Texas; Dr. Brenda A. Butler of Crofton, Maryland; Wanda B. Audrict (husband Larry) of Stone Mountain, Georgia; and devoted stepsons - Dwight Bluford, Sr. (wife Cynthia) of Slidell, Louisiana; Carl Bluford (wife Gladys) of New Orleans, Louisiana; and, daughter - Sandra B. Collins . He is survived by caring sisters, Melvina Butler Raymond of Houston, Texas and Shirley M. Robinson of New Orleans, Louisiana. Other siblings that preceded him in death were Joseph Butler, Jr., Walter Butler, Louise B. Cheri, Albert Robinson, Jr. and Alvin Butler. Eugene leaves behind a host of caring and devoted cousins, nieces, and nephews - Cynthia Cheri, Lillie Cheri, Michael Cheri, Byron Raymond, Leonardo Marin, Janet, Judy, Joycelyn Joy, Jill, Albert Robinson III, Terrence Robinson, and Levi Arnold (wife Michelle) of New Orleans, Louisiana, Joyce Williams, Lucretia Dunn, and Joseph Butler III of California and 4 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Eugene departed this world from his bed in his home of 42 years in the Lower Algiers area of New Orleans, LA on the afternoon of Thursday, December 19, 2013, one month before his 90th birthday. He fought for his country with honorable U.S. Army service in Italy, Syria, and North Africa during World War II. He continued his life of service and later retired from the US Postal Service and maintained his membership in the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC). He also went on to retire from the Crescent City Connection Police Force and for the remainder of his working years served as a security guard with the New Orleans Fairgrounds. He was a proud graduate of McDonogh #35 High School and studied Criminal Justice at Dominican College. He served as a deacon at Greater Roundhill Baptist Church of Violet, LA for many years. Visitation and funeral services will be held on December 30, 2013 at Greater Roundhill Baptist Church located at 2213 Canal Street, Violet, LA at 10 AM. Interment at Merrick Cemetery at 6607 E. St Bernard Hwy, Violet, LA. The family would like to thank those who over the years and at this time supplied prayers, support, love and assistance for us and our loved one.
