Dr. Fleming Holt Stone, DDS
Dr. Stone, of Charlotte, died Saturday, March 12, 2005 at Southminster Retirement Community. He was born on March 31, 1917 in Raleigh, NC to Mr. and Mrs. John E. Stone. Dr. Stone graduated from Oak Ridge Military Academy as well as the University of North Carolina. He then attended Emory School of Dentistry, where he was a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Fraternity and graduated in 1943. In 1944, he attended the U. S. Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, MD and served in the U. S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 as a Lt. Naval Dental Officer aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Saratoga.
In July of 1946, he came to Charlotte and began practicing dentistry with Dr. Frank D. Alford for 5 years. Dr. Stone then opened his own practice and continued dentistry until his retirement in 1987. He also enjoyed golf, working in the yard, and his many projects in the workshop at Southminster.
Dr. Stone was a member of the Second District Dental Society, North Carolina Dental Society and the American Dental Association. He was also a member of Charlotte Country Club and Christ Episcopal Church, where he served many years as an usher. He also served on various committees at Southminster Retirement Community where he resided.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, J. Edwin Stone, of Raleigh, NC and Albert T. Stone, of Petersburg, VA. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rebecca Tucker Stone of Charlotte; daughter, Betsy Stone Keiger and husband, Charlie of Charlotte; son, Holt Stone of Bessemer City; grandchildren, Zach and Elizabeth Keiger of Charlotte, sister, Myra Robison of Lubbock, TX; brother, Dr. William D. Stone, of Atlanta, GA.
A memorial service for Dr. Stone will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Verdery Kerr officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday evening at Southminster and also following the memorial service in the Blue Room at the church. Interment will be private.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at Southminster and his physicians for all their help these past few months.
