Thinking of you and your family

Frank Peterson was my Homeroom teacher (Homeroom 211). I was also part of his Algebra and Journalism classes during my high school years from 1970 thru 1973. He was always resourceful, respectful and encouraging. He was also very into photography. I can honestly say I loved the man. Sincerely, Cylton Ewell

Just learned of the passing of Mr. Frank Peterson, my supreme mentor. I was in Mr. Peterson´s Journalism class at Walter L. Cohen High School for the 1971-72 school year, my senior year. I´d loved to write ever since the second grade. However, when the school year started, I listed Elementary Education as my intended vocation on the 1040 form students filled out for each class. One day in class, Mr. Peterson motioned for me to approach his desk. He said, "Are you sure you want to be an elementary school teacher? The stuff you´re writing in this class is (New Orleans) Times-Picayune level right now." I was floored. It was a life-changing moment, to say the least. I went on to major in Journalism at Loyola University because that´s where Mr. Peterson went to school.
Frank Peterson was one of the most innovative teachers I ever had. I vividly remember an exercise we often had in class in which he listed many sentences. We had to list them in order of importance, and it was vital in teaching the inverted pyramid style of writing, a staple of Journalism along with the five Ws, which he also expertly taught.
I made Loyola´s newspaper staff as a first-semester freshman, and by age 19 covered prep sports with a by-line for the New Orleans States-Item evening daily paper. I went on to a solid newspaper career in which I received many awards. It all goes back to Frank Peterson recognizing my talent and nurturing it as well as inspiring and encouraging me, a skinny Black kid with a big Afro who grew up on Saratoga Street between Jena and Cadiz. Quite simply he is the angel in my life.

Condolences to the Peterson family. I attended Walter L. Cohen in the early 1970's. While Mr. Peterson never taught me, I KNOW he was a well respected educator and one of the more popular and like teachers. Here.is a photo from the 1972 yearbook. May his memory be a blessing and bring a smile to your heart.

Frank will be missed by many. His quick smile, often accompanied by a joke or story, brightened many conversations. A true gentleman and friend to many.

My name is Dwight Peterson. During my senior year (1970-71) at Walter l Cohen High the New Orleans Public system was segregated. Frank Peterson was a part of the small crew of white teachers & administrators to come to Cohen. He was my journalism teacher & moderator for the school's newspaper, which our class produced (& voted me in as editor in chief). Quite frankly, he was the reason I majored in journalism (& sociology my freshman year at Xavier University of Louisiana). He's also a part of the reasoning why my boat stayed the course for a B.A. in Radio TV & Film & the thesis push for an M.A. in Mass Communication Screenwriting at California State University Northridge. But there's something else I realize about Frank Peterson's influence, especially at the time I made his acquaintance. he is a right place at the right time person. That's special. For me...a breathe of fresh air. Indelible. You had to love the guy. I should have bugged him about it our entire lives. But you know, somehow I think he knew. Stay with God, Frank Peterson. Dwight Peterson, still out in the field.

Blessed are we who have had the opportunity to know Frank Peterson. I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with him at Ben Franklin High School and my husband was fortunate to have had Frank as a math teacher at Archbishop Rummel High School. He will never forget the BEST math teacher he ever had! We need more Frank Petersons in this world! We will always remember the fine man he was and he will be missed. -- Karen and Jerry Radosta

It's my second day back at BFHS since Covid. What I would have given to walk into Frank chuckling and holding court in the teachers' lounge. I'll tell a very "Frank" joke in his honor in there later today. He made a difference in so many lives, including mine. Condolences to his family as try to fill the enormous space he occupied.

I knew Frank from my earliest times in the New Orleans French Quarter beginning in 1970, He was always full of life and cheer and good humor, engaging those around him with a joyful vigor. He was a splendid teacher, in all the subjects he taught. He and Rose and my husband and I shared good times. For all these years, Frank and Rose were two of the brightest lights in our respective communities of New Orleans and Charleston. Rest easy, dear friend. Our prayers are with Rose and the entire family.
