Gary Braedt Obituary

Dr. Gary Braedt passed away Friday, January 5, 2024, in Lacombe, Louisiana at the age of 72. Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Wallace Braedt and Anna Lou McKeeken Braedt; as well as his first wife, Stephanie Thibodeaux Braedt. Gary is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Pamela Rothschild Braedt, stepson Jake Rothschild, brothers Allen Braedt (Lynn), Norman Braedt (Nancy), Stephen Braedt (Kathy) and many nieces, nephews and friends. Gary was born in Helena, Montana, and graduated from Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington, in 1969. He earned a Bachelor's of Science from the University of Washington in 1975 and went on to complete a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Indiana at Bloomington in 1984. He did two research fellowships at Virginia Mason Medical Research Center and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. Gary moved to New Orleans in 1989 to accept an assistant professorship at the University of New Orleans. In 2000, he became Dr. Gary Braedt, M.D. when he graduated from Louisiana State University Medical School where he also completed his residency in Internal Medicine. Dr. Braedt practiced medicine in a private practice in New Orleans for over 20 years. Gary had a child's heart and an old soul. He radiated love, wisdom and patience with a lifelong voracious thirst for knowledge. In addition to being a remarkable husband, stepfather, and brother, Gary was perhaps best known as Dr. Braedt, and in recent years as "Doc" and for good reason. The steadfast, gentle hand to which he applied his extensive medical knowledge has healed and comforted many hundreds of patients over the years. In a world that can often be cold and distant, Gary was a constant reminder of the warmth we can harness within ourselves when we truly care for others. He is a true example of a man who left this world a better place than it was when he entered it. The family invites you to join them for services at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home on Wednesday January 24, 2024. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am, a prayer service at 12:30 pm followed by interment in Metairie Cemetery. A reception will also be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made in memory of Dr. Gary Braedt to Lewy Body Dementia Research. Dr. Breast was my doctor before he retired. I thought he was wonderful and I am saddened to learn of his illness and passing. He was special. You have my sincerest condolences.

I just stumbled on this sad information a few minutes ago. Dr. Braedt was my Primary Care Physician until a few years ago when I was notified of his retirement. I've been through two Primary Care Physicians since, both of whom are decent people but seem to rush me through our visits. I've missed him; he was an attentive and caring physician with a great sense of humor. Blessings to all his family.

To: Dr.Braedt 's Family Members

I was a former patient of Dr. Braedt. What an awesome, dedicated, and passionate doctor was he. He took time to listen to your concerns whether medical or personal. What an asset he was to the practice. May it truly be told, that he had great love and dedication to his patients. I was truly blessed to have Doctor Gary Braedt as my physician. May God continue to give all of you the strength to endure this great loss. My condolences are sent out to everyone.

Respectfully yours,

I feel so priviledged to have had this wonderful Doctor & kind gentleman in my late husband & self in our lives. He probably with his vast wisdom & knowledge gave my husband, Gilbert Doubleday, at least 8 more years of living by suggesting a 2nd opinion when his other Dr. said no treatment was necessary. He lived 11 1/2 more years strictly b/c of my bright & sensitive Dr. Braedt. I am foever grateful to him & believe he was the finest Doctor whom I´ve met. I was a nurse for 48 years & have met quite a few. God bless his soul. Eternally thankful for having had him in our lives, Bonnie Doubleday
