Gary Braedt M.D.

Dr. Gary Braedt passed away Friday, January 5, 2024, in Lacombe, Louisiana at the age of 72. Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Wallace Braedt and Anna Lou McKeeken Braedt; as well as his first wife, Stephanie Thibodeaux Braedt. Gary is survived by his loving wife of 15 years, Pamela Rothschild Braedt, stepson Jake Rothschild, brothers Allen Braedt (Lynn), Norman Braedt (Nancy), Stephen Braedt (Kathy) and many nieces, nephews and friends. Gary was born in Helena, Montana, and graduated from Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington, in 1969. He earned a Bachelor's of Science from the University of Washington in 1975 and went on to complete a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Indiana at Bloomington in 1984. He did two research fellowships at Virginia Mason Medical Research Center and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. Gary moved to New Orleans in 1989 to accept an assistant professorship at the University of New Orleans. In 2000, he became Dr. Gary Braedt, M.D. when he graduated from Louisiana State University Medical School where he also completed his residency in Internal Medicine. Dr. Braedt practiced medicine in a private practice in New Orleans for over 20 years. Gary had a child's heart and an old soul. He radiated love, wisdom and patience with a lifelong voracious thirst for knowledge. In addition to being a remarkable husband, stepfather, and brother, Gary was perhaps best known as Dr. Braedt, and in recent years as "Doc" and for good reason. The steadfast, gentle hand to which he applied his extensive medical knowledge has healed and comforted many hundreds of patients over the years. In a world that can often be cold and distant, Gary was a constant reminder of the warmth we can harness within ourselves when we truly care for others. He is a true example of a man who left this world a better place than it was when he entered it. The family invites you to join them for services at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home on Wednesday January 24, 2024. Visitation will begin at 11:00 am, a prayer service at 12:30 pm followed by interment in Metairie Cemetery. A reception will also be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made in memory of Dr. Gary Braedt to Lewy Body Dementia Research.
