Sandy, I would meet you at my first job out of college, Lazarus Department stores. And part of your world included always included Alan. I can honestly say, I never saw him angry. Such a gentle, warm soul... a really great guy. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with you and your family.

Things will not be the same without Alan. He and I have been with the New Orleans Opera longer than any other employees. How many times did I go out to the Studio to pick up MetroPelican props or just the synthesizer, and Alan dropped what he was doing and gathered the guys to help me load up my car? He always had the company's best interests at heart. We will continue to benefit from his wonderful designer's eye for years to come through the many sets he created. All the "little sets," specifically built for our crazy post-Katrina time in McAlister Auditorium on the Tulane campus, have taken on a rental life of their own over the last decade! And I have relied so heavily on his expertise for Loyola productions since 2010. Alan was kind, gentle, and caring; he was loved by all of us. Sandy and Alex - we're here for you, so don't hesitate to call on the "opera family."

From the first time I met Alan on New Orleans' production of Die Walküre in 2001, he always seemed like he had everything in hand. Nothing was ever a crisis, no problem unsolvable. His calm confidence has been a great inspiration to me as a stage manager. And it's the part I'll always remember. Thinking of his family at this time.

Alan was always one of my favorite parts about coming to work with NO. His good spirit and incredible wealth of knowledge made him such a joy to see when I came in town. He will be greatly missed as a colleague and as a friend. Prayers and candles being sent your way from San Francisco. Lisa Anderson

My condolences. Alan was much loved around the opera studio and will be sorely missed every day. so many good memories of long days and late nights working on sets and props. Alan was very good at managing and let every team member show his or her strength and he never micro managed. he was fun to work with and had a good sense of what would work and what wouldn't. what would look good and what wouldn't on stage, and when to give advice and when to step back and let others shine.

Very sad and sorry to hear about this. Alan was hired when I was still working at the Opera in the mid-'90s. He stepped right in and did a super job then and in the years to come. He will definitely be missed, not just by the opera people, but by all others who knew him.
