Gregory Jaynes Obituary

Gregory Douglas Jaynes — writer, nomad and spinner of tales — died March 5 in New Orleans of complications from a brief illness. Mr. Jaynes was born in Florence, Ala., in 1948 and, while he was still young, moved to Memphis with his parents, Doug and Joyce. There, as a young reporter, he covered the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., for The Commercial Appeal. Ambition and restlessness guided him to newspapers in Nashville, Atlanta, Miami and New York. At The New York Times, specifically, he was a reporter, columnist and correspondent. For two years, he covered East Africa while based in Nairobi, Kenya. Later came stints at Time, Life and National Geographic magazines. When he traveled, it was with books, and where he settled — be it Savannah, Washington or Brooklyn — the shelves were home to an eclectic assortment where Hemingway, Montaigne and Walker Percy were neighbors. He wrote his own books along the way, including two volumes of memoirs. First, "Sketches From a Dirt Road," written while living in a farmhouse wrapped in the north Georgia hills. It is a young man's book, light on wisdom but full of grace and charm. At 50 came "Hell on High Water: A Really Sullen Memoir," a reflection on life after misadventures aboard a Russian freighter. A third memoir was in progress at his death, and events suggest he had not lost his love of the dramatic. He died with Mardi Gras at full bore, a parade below his window and the saints marching in the distance. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Madeline Greenleaf Jaynes. He is survived by his son, Todd Douglas Jaynes; daughter, Whitney Ann Laidlaw; sisters, Teresa Jaynes McLeod and Susan Jaynes Neal; brothers, Michael Thomas Jaynes and Philip David Jaynes; and grandchildren, Andrew Chapman Laidlaw and Amanda Jayne Laidlaw.

Greg and I were foreign correspondents in Africa and later colleagues at Time magazine. He was a wonderful story teller and a valuable friend. Im so sorry to learn that he is gone.

I was so sorry to hear of my uncle Greg's passing. Although we lost touch for a long while after my aunt Madeline's passing we had recently traded some emails and I was looking forward to visiting with him. Greg was a beloved uncle to my siblings and cousins, charming us with his wit and worldly experience. He remains very much alive in my memories.

Greg was always one of Dad and Mom's (Ed and Joyce) favorite students. I remember him visiting the house after he moved to New York and I thought he was a movie star. He was bigger than life. My sympathies to the Jaynes family.

My favorite memory with Uncle Greg was my visit to NYC with my friend Erin. We met him at his favorite sushi restaurant (this was my first time to try sushi,) and he ordered quite an assortment of his favorites for us to sample! Then, he and Madeleine took us to a fantastic Indian restaurant for dinner. I also spent many hours in Mamaw's living room on Faxon Avenue cutting out every American Scene column from Time Magazine, and placing them in a scrapbook for her. :)

Greg lived across the street from me on Queensbury Circle for many years. I loved his entire family and grieve with them for their loss.

A classmate whose memory inspires. He turned out years of good writing and encouraged good writers with wit and humor and he covered some of the more somber events that marked the lives of those of us growing up in the shadow of change. He eloquently covered those events with true journalistic profesionalism. I love his memoirs. They speak to me and will continue to play a mentorship role. Rest in Peace Greg - Carry on - your shadow looms large!

My last visit with my brother-in-law Greg, three weeks ago tonight, included a kiss on the cheek, a big hug and nice conversation over dinner at his favorite restaurant in New Orleans, Benachin. Rest In Peace!
