Gwendlyon Saunders Obituary

LITTLE RIVER | Gwendlyon ''Tommie'' Saunders, 81, went to be with the Lord, Thursday, December 27, 2007 at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born November 18, 1926 in Norton, Virginia, daughter of the late Frank and Belvon Noe.

Tommie was a devoted wife and loving mother. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women and a loyal member of the Little River United Methodist Church.

Tommie worked for the State Department in Washington, D.C. during World War II, and married Calvin in July 1945, moving to W.Va., their home state. They were very involved in the United Methodist Church in Sophia, including starting a youth group.

In 1962 they moved to Princeton, shortly after which they started their own discount store business.

In 1988 they moved to Little River where she served in many ways at the Little River church, including serving a Thanksgiving dinner she helped cook every year for those in need.

Tommie is survived by her loving husband, Calvin C. Saunders of Little River; son, Rodney Saunders (Sharon) of Florissant, Colo.; daughter, Pamela Saunders Elmore of Little River; two sisters, Regina Pallares (Toney) of Beckley, W.Va. and Wilma Mullet of Wicomoco Church, Va.; four grandchildren, Andrea Murtiff (Mark) of Roanoke, Va., Bruce Saunders (Erika) of Lancaster, N.Y., Chad Saunders (Amy) of Montrose, Colo., and Tiffani Moxley (Gary) of Macedon, N.Y.; five great-grandchildren, Kelsey Murtiff of Roanoke, Va., Brianne and Michael Moxley of Macedon, N.Y., Cameron Saunders of Lancaster, N.Y., and Rylan Saunders of Montrose, Colo.

She was preceded in death by great-grandson, Ryan Nicholas Murtiff.

Funeral services will be at Little River United Methodist Church, 11 a.m. Saturday, December 29, 2007 with the Rev. Randy Smith officiating. Graveside services will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley, W.Va., on Monday, December 31, 2007.
