Gwendolyn Robinson Obituary

Gwendolyn Jase Robinson passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, March 3, 2024. She was 95 years old. Born in New Orleans, LA, she was the youngest child and only daughter of Mary Ellen Poret and Aquilla Jase. She was the devoted wife of Dr. George E. Robinson, Jr. She attended Gaudet Episcopal School in Gentilly, a private Black educational institution in New Orleans, and received her Bachelor's degree, and Master's degree in Vocational Education, from Southern University A&M in Baton Rouge, LA. Mrs. Robinson taught Home Economics at Capitol High School in Baton Rouge before being appointed State Supervisor in Home Economics for the Louisiana Department of Education. She was one of the first African Americans to become a State Supervisor and served under three Louisiana State Superintendents of Education. "Gwen," as she loved to be called, was a charter member of the Baton Rouge Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. She loved exposing children to new situations and opportunities to broaden their horizons and included this perspective in how she raised her three children. She was most proud that they all graduated from college and had advanced degrees. She loved gardening and spending time in nature. As a longtime member of the Flower Lovers Garden Guild, she was a passionate advocate for community beautification and was most proud of the Scotlandville Plaza beautification project in 2005. In later years, she enjoyed volunteering as a docent at the LSU Rural Life Museum. Mrs. Robinson is survived by her son, Dr. George E. Robinson, III; granddaughter, Lynette Jase Martin; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and family friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. George E. Robinson, Jr.; two daughters, Durinda L. Robinson and Beverly C. Robinson-Downs; son-in-law, Dr. Raymond A. Downs; parents, Mary Ellen Segura and Aquilla Jase; and two brothers, Aquilla Jase, and Clinton Jase. Visitation will be held at Hall's Celebration Center, 9348 Scenic Highway, Baton Rouge, LA, at 9:00 am on Monday, March 11, 2024. The service will begin at 10:00 am, conducted by Rev. Patricia Chambers. Interment to follow at Southern Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Robinson Family's Endowment– Southern University System Foundation: https://foundation.sus.edu/robinson-family-memorial-contribution/.
