Hans Luetkemeier

Hans Luetkemeier passed away peacefully on May 5, 2022, surrounded by family. Born in Paderborn, Germany, Hans' younger years were spent running track, specifically the 200M, where he advanced all the way to the final in the German Olympic Trials in 1954. Early on in life, Hans gained a passion for metalsmithing, and after completing his apprenticeship in Germany he obtained his master's degree as a Master Gold and Silversmith (the equivalent of a doctorate degree). In 1961, Hans embarked on a new journey by immigrating to the United States and was soon joined by his wife to be, Hilde, whom he had met in Darmstadt, Germany during his apprenticeship. They married in Atlanta, GA and moved to New Orleans permanently in 1964 after falling in love with the city during a visit the previous year. Following a short stretch working as a typewriter salesman at New Orleans Business Machines, Hans was eventually able to focus on his passion and trade, becoming a founding partner of New Orleans Silversmiths on Chartres St. in the French Quarter. In 1972, he ventured out on his own and formed Hans Luetkemeier Co., where for years he displayed his true craftsmanship to the many locals and visitors who admired his offerings. He was featured in the Times Picayune and New Orleans Magazine for his work, at the time being one of only four active Master Gold and Silversmiths in the United States. He would later relocate his shop to Metairie where he would live out his career all the way to his retirement. Hans was passionate about soccer, and after playing in the men's league at Audubon Park, he served as a volunteer coach at Willowdale Soccer Club for many years, with his teams winning three state championships and two state runner-up titles. He was proud to have been able to provide financial support to countless families during his coaching career, families who otherwise would have never been able to have their children participate due to their lack of financial resources. Hans' ultimate joy was the time he spent with his granddaughters. He loved them dearly and was always interested in keeping up with their latest activities, ranging from school to sports. Hans was known for his love of life and always grateful for his close friendships as well as the support he received from his employees, customers and fellow business owners. Hans is survived by his loving wife Hilde, his son Hans, his daughter-in-law Erin Bell Luetkemeier and his grand-children Mary Kathleen Haase Luetkemeier and Jane Calistoga Tierney Luetkemeier. There will be a celebration of life at a later date for close friends and family.
