Harold Gorman Obituary

Harold John Gorman, Jr. died peacefully Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015, surrounded by those whom he loved and who loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold John Gorman, Sr. and Margery Aymami Gorman. He is survived by his wife of more than 49 years, Doris Ann von Dammerau Gorman, his two daughters, Catherine Ann Gorman Kuuskraa and Madeline Jeanne Gorman Holbrook, and his sons-in-law Jason Alexander Kuuskraa and William Franklin Holbrook. Harold is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, James Alexander Kuuskraa, Caroline Gorman Kuuskraa, William John Holbrook and Thomas George Holbrook, who affectionately called him "G-daddy." Harold graduated from St. Stephen's Catholic School and De La Salle High School. He received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Tulane University and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Chicago. He served in the U.S. Air Force, where he worked on the Titan missile program and was later assigned to the Office of the U.S. Secretary of Defense at the Pentagon during the Vietnam War. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Air Force, Harold served as an adjunct professor at the University of New Orleans, and was then recruited by Battelle Institute to serve as regional manager of their Montgomery, Ala. office. Later, at the request of the U.S. Corps of Engineers, Harold returned to New Orleans to direct Battelle's Atchafalaya River Basin project. Newly-elected Mayor Ernest N. Morial asked Harold to serve in his new administration. During his 25 years with the City of New Orleans, Harold was appointed Director of Safety and Permits, Director of Streets, and retired as the Executive Director of the Sewerage and Water Board. Following his retirement from city government, Harold established an international utility consulting firm, where he advised public works agencies and water and wastewater utilities on management issues. During that time, he traveled extensively throughout the Middle East and Europe. He then joined Morgan Keegan and Company in New Orleans as a consulting banker. In his last years of retirement, he devoted his time to his family, his church, traveling and his beloved garden. Harold was a parishioner of Most Holy Name of Jesus Church and a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. He was also a member of the Military Order of the Foreign Wars and enjoyed his active membership with the Army and Navy Club of Washington, D.C. He was also a member of a number of New Orleans civic and social organizations. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral mass at Harold's childhood Catholic parish church, St. Stephen's, now known as Good Shepherd. The mass will be celebrated by a childhood schoolmate Rev. Louis Arceneaux, C.M. Visitation at the Church will begin at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 11, followed by mass at 11:00 a.m. St. Stephen's Church is located at 1025 Napoleon Avenue.
