My condolences and prayers go to the family of Mrs. Hazel Rhea Hurst. I had the honor of interviewing her briefly by telephone on two occasions. She related many stories to me about her upbringing first along the Protection Levee and later in Shrewsbury. I had conducted research on the blacks in the Camp Parapet area. She was truly a leader and a great woman. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen.

To my dad, Ralph Rhea, Sr., my aunts, uncles and his cousins and their families, may God comfort each one of you. Aunt Hazel was received into His tender loving care where she will find peace and everlasting happiness.
Aunt Hazel was kind and loving to us. I will miss the many wonderful conversation and visits we shared together. I will always remember her abiding love for my brother, Chester. She cared for many, but had a tender soft for him. She enjoyed hearing about our lives and telling us about her life. She passed down a legacy for us, a wealth of information. Aunt Hazel was my teacher. After school, my friend, Bonnie and I would sell "coconut candy" for her. She will always hold a special place in my heart and in the hearts of all whose life was touched by her. Aunt Hazel enjoyed life. This is what I will pass on to my family -- Alove of family. May God grant us peace.
