Herbert Christenberry Obituary

Herbert William "Chris" Christenberry III passed away in his home on Friday, January 18, 2019, after a brief illness, at the age of 63. He is survived by his loving mother, Ann Jacobs Christenberry, his brothers, Leon Wayne Christenberry, Andrew "Drew" C. Christenberry (Anita), and sister, Cynthia "Cindy" Moll (Jerry). He is also survived by nephews, Corey Daniel Moll (Hattie), Casey William Moll (Grayson Anne), niece Madeline Elizabeth Christenberry, and sister-in-law Lisa Christenberry Maestri. He recently became a Great Uncle to Trotter and Winnie Moll. He was preceded in death by his father Herbert W. Christenberry Jr. and his brother Edward Clay Christenberry. The eldest of five children, Chris spent his formative years in St. Pius X Parish where he attended school, Mass, and became an Eagle Scout. A proud graduate of Jesuit High School (Class of '73), Chris rarely missed a chance to support the Blue Jays or proclaim the impact of his Jesuit education. Chris attended Loyola and the University of New Orleans, where after he jumped headfirst into what would become a long, successful career in public service. At a young age, Chris was elected to the Democratic State Central Committee prior to going to work for the Louisiana Department of Commerce. There, he served as Chief of Staff to the Secretary of Commerce prior to being named Deputy Secretary in January of 1987. After serving as an assistant in Mayor Sidney Barthelemy's Administration, Chris found his professional calling when he embarked on a 22-year career within the Orleans Parish Court Intervention Services. He therein cemented his legacy through his work to help start and develop the Intensive Probation, Pretrial Services, and Drug Court Programs. Before departing "Tulane and Broad," Chris had achieved the rank of Chief of Field Operations and Deputy Chief of Court Intervention Services. In 2016 Chris assumed his final post as a public servant behind a different badge, earning his full-time commission as an Orleans Parish Sheriff's Deputy, finishing at the top of his academy class. He was proud of his work, but his greatest achievement can be seen in the amount of pure joy and true friendship he brought to so many. Chris's spirit will live on in those who experienced this, especially his family down on Decatur Street. Smooth as his seersucker suit and iconic as his top hat in Jim Monaghan's St. Patrick's Day Parade, Chris so effortlessly left an impression on all that will forever remain unequalled. A beloved original member of the Window Crew at Molly's at the Market, "Bar Dad" will be sorely missed by his friends and chosen sons and daughters. Services will be held at St. Pius X Church, 6600 Spanish Fort Blvd. on Saturday, February 2, 2019. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation beginning at 11:00am then Mass will be celebrated at 1:00pm. Interment will follow in Metairie Cemetery. Chris was a wonderful person. My sister Debi and I grew up next door to the Christenberrys on Gull St. They were family to us. For many years, I rode to St. Pius and then to Jesuit with Mr. Christenberry and then Chris in the station wagon. Those rides were great learning experiences. I have wonderful memories of playing basketball in the Christenberry's back yard, football in the street and baseball in the park with Chris and talking with him about almost everything. His death comes too soon. He made great contributions to New Orleans and to all who knew him. My condolences to Drew, Cindy, Miss Ann and the rest of the family. Rest in peace Chris.

I was married to Chris for 5 years and even though we were divorced, we still loved each other. He was my soulmate and I was his. Neither one of us ever remarried. We had just talked on Monday before he passed on Friday and were planning on getting together on Saturday. My heart is broken into a million pieces and my tears are flowing. I love you my baby. Save a place in Heaven for me.

Chris was a sweetheart. He always found a way to make me laugh. When I had my stroke and couldn't speak well, he would call me with a word for the day. The first word for me to say was Chattanooga Choo Choo.. I'll miss you my friend. I've missed you coming to see me in Magistrate Court. Much love
