James Phelan Maloney

James Phelan Maloney died at 11:05 a.m. Monday, February 17, 2003 at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge. He was born January 27, 1922 in New Orleans, the son of the late James P. Maloney, Sr. and Esther Coburn Maloney. He is survived by sisters, Esther Fisher of Luling and Johanna Kotter of Mandeville; and nieces and nephews, Lynne Rawley, Phyllis Meole, Nick Meole, Kathy Bernacchio, Charles Meole, Kay Blocker, Kenneth Fisher, Jack Fisher, Michael Fisher, Don Maloney, A.J. Maloney, Jr., James Maloney, Jay Serio, Andrea Deaton, Joanne Lopes, James Kotter, Jr., Don Kotter, Coby Kotter, Barbie Avila, Kay Williams and Lynne Thomson; many great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Arthur Maloney, and sisters Mary Elma Maloney, Julia Meole, , Lucille Serio, Ida Maloney and Juanita Thomson; and nephew, Leonard Fisher, Jr. He was a member of the 141st Washington Artillery of New Orleans, which was mustered into federal service of the U.S. Army. He served with the 8th Field Artillery Battalion and rose to the rank of chief warrant officer. He served in Normandy, Northern France, the Battle of the Bulge, the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He received the Bronze Star, GO 195 XIX Corps Medal in 1945, the European, African, Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five bronze stars, American Campaign Medal, American Defense Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Presidential Testimonial. After discharge he received a bachelor of science degree from Southwestern Louisiana Institute, now the University of Southwestern Louisiana. He was Chairman of the Board of Coburn Supply Co with which he had more than 55 years of dedicated service. He will be remembered for the graciousness, fairness, honesty and generosity by customers and employees. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Michael Collins at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, Baton Rouge, LA on Thursday, February 20, 2003 followed by graveside service at Metairie Cemetery, New Orleans. Farewell, God take care of you. Those who called you Uncle James, James, and those who called you Mr. Maloney, in addition to your special sidekicks, Ray, Karen, Pete, Kathy and Nicky, who responded when you called, will remember you with fondness and affection."
