Janet Harder Obituary

HARDER Janet Harder "A star has come out to tell me it's time to go." Janet Harder died peacefully at her home on Thursday, January 5, 2012 after a yearlong fight against cancer. She was born and grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. Janet resided in Raleigh, NC with her husband and family for the past 17 years. For a significant part of the first half of her life, she was a star in every sense of the word. She performed in college at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette, Louisiana, in New Orleans with Tulane Summer Lyric Theater and elsewhere while in graduate school at Tulane University. She performed roles such as Guinevere in Camelot, Julie Jordan in Carousel, Nellie in South Pacific and numerous others. She sang with notables such as Gordon McRae, Marc Embree, Anthony Laciura, and others who had their own distinguished careers. Her beautiful lyric soprano voice was only matched by her inner spiritual beauty. During the 2nd half of her life, while still fully involved in music in church choirs and at other special occasions, she starred again as a wonderful mother, wife and teacher. She was a leader in teaching children's Sunday school and youth groups at Ridge Road Baptist Church in Raleigh and at other churches in Mississippi and Louisiana. She loved children-all children, whether she found them at the Raleigh Rescue Mission, at church, in her own family or elsewhere. Above all else, Janet loved family-her children, grandchildren and all relatives-even those remotely called a relative. They all became her love and her personal concern. Schedule a family reunion or other family get-together and you could count on Janet to be there. And she would be the happiest person there. She loved family! She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, companion and friend. Her genuineness, kindness, enthusiasm and the spirit of her heart were a wonder to all who knew her. And if you knew her, you loved her. She is with the Lord now. We will miss her terribly in this world, but look forward to seeing her again in heaven. Janet was predeceased by her mother Grace Chapman Mallory and her father James Guy Mallory. She is survived by her three sisters and their families: Nancy Archer of Liberty Texas, Jamie van Benthuysen of New Orleans, and Susan Shaw of Mandeville Louisiana. She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Glenn; their son, Dan, his wife Amanda and their two daughters: Hayden and Aubrey; their daughter Elizabeth; and their daughter Katherine Smith, her husband Andy and their son Benjamin. A Funeral Service will be held at Ridge Road Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 10, 2012 with visitation preceding the service at 12:30 p.m.. Family members are invited to attend the burial at Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh immediately following the service In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory to Ridge Road Baptist Church, 2011 Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC 27607. Dear Glenn, Dan, Liz and Kat: Ian, the girls and I are so sorry to hear about Janet. She was such a wonderful friend and when we got the chance to talk over the years, it was a though we talked yesterday. I loved your mom so much. She was always so gracious and kind and of couse, that voice! The one and only time Janet and I sang a duet was in Madison and I was so delighted that she asked me! I can't remember what we sang only that it was something that she loved. Thank you all for sharing her with us these last 25+ years. I know she is not only singing in the heavenly choir but she is directing it, too! I will miss her terribly and always be grateful to the Harder family for coming into our lives. We love you all....Annette, Ian and Abby Richardson, Jennifer Richardson Byrd.

I was terribly saddened to learn of Janet's illness & passing. Although many years have gone by since we last saw one another, and despite the shock of stumbling across her obituary in the Times-Picayune, the image of her lovely smiling face brought such a rush of happy memories from our days at Tulane. My condolences go out to you Glenn and your entire family ... along with the hope that this difficult time will be less painful by the joyful recollections of her kindness, love and many talents. That is how I will forever think of Janet.

Thanking God that He allowed Al & me the opportunity to visit Janet in October. That visit will always be tucked away in my heart. As ill as she was, she radiated with beauty, inside and out. I was like "how does she do that!" We made the very best of our one-hour visit covering our fun days in Madison, in Mandeville....and, of course, the blessings of grandchildren! The best part was our laughter - we were always good at laughing and sometimes not even knowing why we were laughing!! As we said goodbye that fall day, we both were giggling -- how perfect was that!!! Also, we were talking about how beautiful and BIG her impatiens were - never matter which state she lived -- she had a green thumb for impatiens!!! I will be planting some this spring and hoping that she will send some heavenly breaths my garden's way. Yes, Janet Harder a star -- now, a star in Heaven, don't be surprised one night to look up and see a particular glimmering star -- and -- it is "winking" at you!!! That would be our one and only Janet!! Thank you God for the life of Janet Mallory Harder.

We will always remember the many Halloween nights we spent with Janet and her family. Always a tradition to stop at the Harder's near the end of our 'trick or treat' route for some traditional Louisiana-style cookin', good conversation and a laugh at our crazy costumes. We love Janet for her welcoming smile, warm personality and grace. We will miss her dearly.

Janet will always be with me. This teenage beauty of New Orleans, a true Southern Bell, Janet was seen by this boy as very special girl. I loved the Mallory's, our church and city. Although decades have come and gone since I last lived those times, I will forever remember Janet and those wonderferful days. This old 65 year old man is sad to hear she is no longer of this Earth, but glad to know she is in a much better place. I look forward to seeing her again one day.

Janet was a beautiful, dear friend and I will never forget her sweet smile and happy, perky voice. JoAnn and I always said Janet could talk to anyone! On shopping trips, she would befriend people in stores and they would remember her when she returned. When the 3 of us went to Myrtle Beach to see Debbie Reynolds and Al Martino, she started a conversation with him at the breakfast buffet and learned all about his childhood and early life. She was truly unique, greatly loved and will be sorely missed. Our loss is Heaven's gain.

Glenn and Family,
I met Janet while working for Drs. Moser and Hudgins. She never came in without a smile on her face and a gleam in her eyes. She was an inspiration to me while she went through her first bout of cancer - never complaining and always upbeat. I thought of her so often when I went through my own cancer treatment - I would see her smile and encouraging ways. She helped me so much even though she didn't know it. I feel a lot of people have had the same experience - she just glowed with warmth and friendliness. She will not be forgotten. She and I shared a love of our children and she always had news to share about her family. What a wonderful spirit - she will live on in memories of everyone she touched.

Dear Harder Family,

It saddens me to hear of Janet's passing, as I was not aware of her sickness this time around. I had met her years ago through Natasha, our nail lady and friend. She was always a delight to be around and I was always excited to know she was coming and Natasha was running behind. Janet's smile would light up a room and her sweet, sincere, loving kindness came through when she would just love all over my girls, as each one of them were small. She would bring books when she knew I would be there to read to whichever of my daughters were there that day. She had told us of a book called "Snow Angel" A Russian Folk Tale, that her daughters had loved as little girls. I have since bought that book and my two youngest love for me to read it to them. My girls are also saddened as they remember her sweet, smiling, always kind face. Please know that my thoughts and prayers go out to all of you, at this time of needed support. There is indeed a new Angel looking down on us all and her beautiful smile and voice will never be forgotten. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

Dear Glenn,

Monique and I send you our deepest condolences. We are so sad to hear this news. Janet was such an amazing person. I remember the first time I heard her sing in New Orleans. What a fantastic voice! So beautiful. She was such a great artist. I remember how much my parents adored her and appreciated all the love and talent she brought to FBC New Orleans. She was such a good friend to our family. So many great times of fun and fellowship. Janet was warm, caring, generous, kind and just overflowing with love for everyone. We knew Janet when she was at First Baptist Church New Orleans in the early 1970's. It seems so long ago, but I can still hear that beautiful voice and, from the pictures, she kept that loving smile. Just about a week ago, we were listening to Andrea' Bocelli and Janet, as well as Anthony Luciura, came to mind as we reminisced about how blessed we were to have each of them in our midst at that time in our lives... singing God's praises. We are thankful that she touched our lives in such a powerful way. We pray God's blessings upon you and that you will be comforted in your time of grief.

January 6, 2012

Glenn and family, I was not aware of Janet's illness during this past year and was shocked to learn of her death. Please know of my prayers for you during these days of grief and loss. I greatly appreciated your expression of concern during our family's recent loss.
