Joan de la Bretonne Faust, of Mandeville, LA, passed away on Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at the age of 67. She was a beloved wife, mother, and friend, as well as a lifelong teacher and scholar. Joan was born in Houma, LA, where she attended Vanderbilt High School. She received her B.A. in French Education with a minor in English at Nicholls State University, followed by her M.A. in English at Louisiana State University. She taught French and English at Archbishop Chapelle High School for eight years before returning to LSU to earn her Ph.D. in 1992. She spent 30 years as a Professor of English at Southeastern Louisiana University, where she shared her love of the written word with countless students. She was deeply involved with The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, including serving as Chapter President. She published extensively on 16th and 17th century English literature, and authored the book Andrew Marvell's Liminal Lyrics, which was published by University of Delaware Press. She was an active member of the Andrew Marvell Society, the Renaissance Society of America, the South-Central Renaissance Conference, and the John Donne Society, for which she served as a member of the Executive Board. Joan was very strong in her Catholic faith, and gave selflessly of her time and talents volunteering at Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Mandeville for the Music Ministry, the Stewardship Committee, the Festival of the Lake, the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary, the Homebound Ministry, and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. She was awarded the Order of Saint Louis in 2005 for her leadership and service to the church. She is survived by her husband, Mark Faust; her children, Joseph Faust (Carissa), Katherine Faust Stryjewski (Tomasz), and Alison Faust McDaniel (Justin); her grandsons Mark Sebastian Faust, Griffin Faust, Luke Stryjewski, and Liam McDaniel; and her sister, Mary Jane de la Bretonne. She is preceded in death by her parents, Archibald de la Bretonne and Marjorie Trahan de la Bretonne, and her brother Thomas de la Bretonne. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, November 26 at 12:00 pm at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church at 312 Lafitte Street in Mandeville, LA, with visitation beginning at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Joan Faust Memorial Fund, Southeastern Foundation, SLU 10703, Hammond, LA 70402, to establish a Phi Kappa Phi scholarship fund in Joan's name. I simply cannot believe that Joan has died. Cannot believe that she will be gracing the John Donne Society annual conferences every February. I have known Joan forever, that is after she starting coming to the Donne Society. The best person, wonderful scholar, a friend I admired and loved, love still. The world, and certainly the Donne world, will never be the same without her. I can't help the tears as I write it. I can still hear her voice! see her beaming and welcoming face, hear the last paper she gave at our conference, which was brilliant. Joan you are always in my heart, and as they say in my Jewish tradition (but actually crosses all confessional boundaries as Joan did), may her memory be a blessing. It always has been. Sending the deepest condolences to her husband Mark, her children, and her grandchildren who she so often told me about, beaming. Her faith was so strong. love you, dearest Joan, Achsah

Dr. Faust was an incredible influence on me when I attended Southeastern. When I attended the first time, she took on the position of my academic advisor and when I returned years later, she took me in without hesitation. She encouraged me at every stage of my learning and, near the end of grad school, she nominated me to present my paper on John Donne (one of my personal favorite papers) to the entire English department.

I have missed her since I graduated and I will continue to miss her. Prayers for you and yours.

Joan always had a smile on her face as she prepared to tackle her next task with energy, enthusiasm, and optimism. We remember too how often she spoke of her family, always beaming with love and happiness.

To Mark and the family,

My deepest sympathies to all of you for the lost of a wonderful mother, wife, friend, friend and teacher.

As you know, I had the privilege of knowing Joan both at work and through organizations at church. My children sang in the children´s choir when she accompanied on the guitar (many years ago). In addition, she played guitar for a contemporary group that both my daughter and I participated in.

And of course, the Ladies Auxiliary was another group where I had the privilege of working with Joan.

At Southeastern, Joan asked me to assist with the books of Phi Kappa Phi, and we worked together scheduling classes at the St. Tammany location. She was always a joy to work with.

She stayed positive and her attitude was contagious. We will miss her.

Mark, Mary Jane & all the Faust family,
My deepest condolences for the great loss of your beautiful loved one, Joan. She will be greatly missed. The world was made better because of who she was and whose she was. She left this world too soon, but the impact that she made in her world will live on through countless people. will always remember my neighbor and friend on Maple St., the girl with the pretty long brown hair braids. That was sweet Joan. Until we meet again Joan. God bless.

I knew Joan through the SCRC, and she was such an unpretentious and gracious person. I didn't know of her faith, but it does help to explain why she was such a wonderful person. She will be greatly missed.

Joan was a beacon in sometimes very dark world, which is dimmed by her loss. She was a beloved member of the scholarly world in which she will be sorely missed. I feel privileged to have known her and experienced first hand her good cheer and empathic presence. Sincere condolences to Mark and their children and grandchildren.
