John Firestone Obituary

John Edgar Firestone, Sr. died Friday, April 3, 2020 at The Carpenter House in Baton Rouge after a brief illness. He was 90 years old. Born in Rosepine, Louisiana, on June 3, 1929, he spent most of his youth in Hathaway, Louisiana. He received a BA in chemistry from McPherson College. After a year of teaching high school chemistry, he returned to Louisiana to attend LSU Medical School in New Orleans, where he also taught physiology for a year. He was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society and received the Outstanding Surgery Student award of his 1957 graduating class. Nonetheless, he decided to specialize in Internal Medicine. After completing his Internship (Philadelphia General Hospital), Internal Medicine Residency, and a year of Nephrology Fellowship (Charity Hospital of New Orleans), he served two years at the US Naval Hospital at Beaufort, SC. At time of his military discharge, he had attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Returning to Louisiana, he joined the Expressway Medical Center in 1963, where he practiced general Internal Medicine for over 30 years. He was particularly active at West Jefferson Hospital, where he was on the committee that brought the first ICU and CCU to the hospital in 1965. He later served as Chief of Medicine for WJGH and on their Board of Directors. He served in many medical civic positions, including assistant Medical Director of the Jefferson Parish Red Cross Disaster Program during Hurricane Camille. He formed many long, close friendships over those years and even after his retirement continued to enjoy the company of those colleagues as part of the Retired Old Medics Eating Out (ROMEOs). Dr. Firestone is survived by his three children, all of whom entered healthcare professions: John Firestone, Jr., MD (and his wife, Sally Peyrefitte), Claire Firestone Pasqua, RN, MSN, FNP (and her husband, Samuel Pasqua), and Marjorie Firestone, RN, BSN, CEN. He is also survived by three stepchildren: Ann Tallant Orlando (and her husband, Terry), Drury Tallant (and his wife, Sandra), and James Tallant (and his wife, Carole). Dr. Firestone has two beloved grandchildren: Jason Pasqua (and his wife, Annamarie) and Sarah Pasqua. He equally treasured his two step-grandchildren: Frances Orlando Bertolami (and her husband, Scott) and Ryan Tallant (and his wife, Piper). He adored visits with his three great grandchildren: Evelyn, Samuel, and Joseph Pasqua. He especially enjoyed updates on the exploits of his step-great-grandchildren, Owen and Andrew Bertolami. John is preceded in death by his two wives, Paula Finn Firestone, to whom he was married for 40 years, and Ruby Ann Lamendola Tallant Firestone, to whom he was married for 15 years. He was also preceded by his parents, Vena Peters Firestone and Lenard J. Firestone; his stepmothers, Lena Sonnier Firestone Guillory and Mellie Brown Fulmer Firestone; and his siblings, Harvey Joseph Firestone (and his wife, Freddie Eason Firestone), Elizabeth Firestone Bollich (and her husband, Rev. Robert Bollich), Katherine Firestone Jester (and her husband, Richard Jester, DVM), and Carl Firestone. John loved to sing and belonged to the choir of every church he attended. He relished his time with the New Orleans Mardi Gras Barbershop Chorus and the St. James Place Snazzy Singers. He was an enthusiastic traveler and visited five continents, missing only Australia and Antarctica. The family extends their gratitude to the staff of St. James Place of Baton Rouge, François Bend of Gonzales, and St. Joseph Hospice at Carpenter House for the gentle care and comfort they showed John in his later years. Given the circumstances of the coronavirus pandemic, burial will be a private event. The family is very appreciative of the many expressions of support and condolence. They are planning a celebration of John's life at a future date. Friends and family are invited to view and sign the online Guest Book at churchfuneralservices.com. In 1999 my husband, a niece and I (John's cousin) flew from CA to visit Jennings, LA (my mother's birthplace). Visited a couple of cemeteries to see family gravesite. Had dinner with Joe, Liz and visited with John who gave me lots of pictures of the Firestone family. It was a wonderful time together. I just recently learned of the death of Liz and, now John. I knew Joe was gone but was so saddened to learn the other siblings are as well. An unforgettable experience. Good memories of the Firestone family (and Minnix family too). Always heard so much about the family and Mom got letters from them once in awhile. Do not know how to get in touch with John , Jr. but if he reads this know that you all are in my thoughts and prayers. Much love, Barbara June (Smith) Hill.

My sympathies go out to the family of Dr. Firestone. I was his medical assistant from about 1991 until he retired. It was a great pleasure working for him. He treated me with the most upright respect. He was so good to his patients. He took care of them in a way that does not exist anymore. He made sure all of his patients' phone calls were returned before leaving for the day and he made sure everything was handled before letting his patients go, no matter how long it took. I had no idea that Dr. Firestone was involved in all of the things listed in his obituary. I am truly impressed. He will be missed. I would love to be able to attend the celebration you will be having in the future if someone could contact me.

R.I.P. John Firestone. One of the most outstanding members of the memorable class of 1957, L.S.U. Health Science Center, New Orleans. A much appreciated mentor to young physicians, and an outstanding physician for many years. He set an example for us all. It was a privilege to know him these many years.

On behalf of Althea Dupre (LPN at Expressway Medical Center she greatly repected Dr. Firestone and his work. She worked with him and others at the center. With his contributions to the medical field I know he will be greatly missed by family and friends.
