John Fortenberry Obituary

FORTENBERRY John William Fortenberry passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at the age of 91. A native of Duluth MN, raised in Bismarck, ND and Long Beach, MS. Long time resident of New Orleans, LA. Beloved husband of the late Rita Derbonne Fortenberry. Loving father of Anne F. McGaha (John), Mary F. Barnes, John W. Fortenberry, Jr., Angela F. Passafume (David) and the late Catherine V. Fortenberry. Grandfather of John R. McGaha III, Maureen M. Sonnier (Scott), Patrick J. McGaha; Jessica F. Chaisson (J. Paul); Ashleigh V. Passafume, David J. Passafume Jr. Great-grandfather of Jude, Brennan, Christian and Anne Marie Sonnier; and Isabelle Chaisson. Brother of Fr. Jerome D. Fortenberry, Dorothy F. Smoloski, Elizabeth F. C. McGahren, the late Virginia R. Fortenberry, Mary F. Drozd, Dr. Robert C. Fortenberry (Dolly), Louis H. Fortenberry (Tina), Lois "Jackie" Fortenberry. Graduated from Loyola University with a B. A. Degree in History. Retired from the LA State Dept. of Employment Security as an Area Manager, after working as a radio broadcaster in his early career. A Catholic and a long time parishioner of Holy Rosary Church he served as a lector and member of the Holy Name Society. He was an avid reader, historian, Army Veteran of WWII, world traveler, and passionate sports fan ("Grandpa's teams": Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Celtics, Green Bay Packers and beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish). Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, 3368 Esplanade Ave, New Orleans, LA on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at 12:00 PM.
