John Holland Obituary

John Birl Holland, M.D. passed away peacefully on Friday, May 5, 2017 at the age of 89. Beloved husband of 57 years to Nancy C. Holland. Proud father of John Byrl Holland, M.D. (Allyson), Michael Ryburn Holland, M.D. (Wendy), and the late Lynn Carole Holland. Loving grandfather of Brittani (Edgar), Heather, Ashley, Hunter, John III, Hillary, Christopher, Daniel, Claire, Emily, and Abigail. Son of the late Walter Daniel Holland and Margaret Ann Holland. Brother of the late Kenneth M. Holland. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. John was a native of Albertville, AL and a resident of River Ridge, LA. He graduated from Tulane University Medical School in 1953 and served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force until 1957. He was a member of Parkway Presbyterian Church and was a physician at Ochsner Clinic. John was fond of Shakespeare and foreign languages and loved farming on Sand Mountain and woodworking. However, his greatest joy in life was his grandchildren. The family would like to give special thanks to St. Joseph's Hospice and to John's caregivers, Cindy Lohr and Debra Anding, for their special care during his illness. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Service at Parkway Presbyterian Church, 6200 Camphor St. Metairie, LA 70003 on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 11:00 am. Visitation will be at the church from 10:00 am until service time. Interment will follow the service at Garden of Memories Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in John's name to Alzheimer's Foundation of America at www.alzfdn.org or to Parkway Presbyterian Church, 6200 Camphor St. Metairie, LA 70003. Nancy and family, Mom told me about Dr. Holland's passing. I am so sorry for your loss. Whenever I am visiting Mom, I walk in the neighborhood and by your house. I always think of you both and wonder how you are doing. Just know that you will always be in my thoughts especially when I go home.

To the Holland family.
I am an appreciative mother of the girl tha Dr. Holland delivered. Thanks for sharing him with his patients. I have fond memories of his sense of humor getting me through those days. Lynn Foil

Dearest Nancy and family, I need not tell you of my deep love and respect for this gentle soul. Dr. Holland guided and shared my Ochsner career for more than 17 years. I have missed his smile since leaving his side in 1987. I will miss him even more now. RIP dearest friend.

Dearest Nancy and family, please accept my deepest sympathy. John was my physician and delivered all four of my children. He was my only son's godfather. But, most of all, he and Nancy have been neighbors and friends for over 50 years. I still have wonderful memories of a surprise birthday party that Nancy, Kay LeJeune and I gave for John, Duke and my John. The wait staff got lost (not many through street and long before GPS) and guests had to pour their own libations at the beginning of the party. There are many more memories that I shall cherish. John had a warm laugh and a great sense of humor. He had to in order to put up with me as a patient!
