Joseph Stern Obituary

Joseph Michael "Joe" Stern, beloved father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away on September 10, 2023, at age 81. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to Milton and Ruth Stern on July 11, 1942, grew up in a close-knit family, and was raised with a strong sense of community. Stern graduated from Charles F. Brush High School and received his BA with Honors from Fenn College in 1964 (now Cleveland State University). He received a Master's (MA) in Literature from Ohio State University in 1968, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Stern had a successful career as a Professor of English, teaching for several high schools and colleges in Cleveland, Oakland, and New Orleans. At San Quentin prison, Stern taught literacy skills to incarcerated men. He taught freshman English at Southern University in New Orleans for twelve years. He was a mentor and role model to many young people: his objective was always to help them find their path. Stern brought his strong sense of community and responsibility to New Orleans in 1979, and became part of its distinctive cultural traditions. He was a Skeleton Man for the Golden Eagles Indian Gang, one of the Mardi Gras Indian tribes, and as well for the Forgotten Souls Brass Band, an all-star unit featuring members of Rebirth and the Dirty Dozen brass bands. He performed multiple times as Skeleton Man on the Jazz & Heritage Stage of Jazz Fest. In 1988, he joined the Prince of Wales, the second oldest Social Aid and Pleasure Club, and became a mainstay of second-line culture, known and beloved by all as "White Boy Joe." He organized the first second line post-Katrina in December 2005, a major event for reviving the city's morale, and soon after became a spokesman for the second-line coalition. Over the next decade, he served in every position of the Prince of Wales, including President. He also had a deep passion for union organizing and he focused it through working-class political groups. When the city tried to shut second-line parades for violence post-Katrina, Stern was integral to the federal suit brought by the ACLU. He was a political activist through several organizations including the New Orleans Peoples Assembly, Take 'Em Down Nola, and the Afro-American Liberation League. He was also a member of the Krewe du Jieux and was an initiated member of La Source Ancienne Ounfo. Joe is survived by his ex-wife (friend), Cheryl Stern, and his children, Aaron (Tammy) Stern, Delia Young, and Lakisha (Mario) LaBeach; his sister Susie Stern and brother Barry (Maria) Stern; his grandchildren Gabriella, Alexia, Mikaela, Maegon (Christopher), Mason and Miguel, and his great-granddaughter Aloni. A memorial service for Joseph "White Boy Joe" Stern will be held at Jazz and Heritage Foundation, 1205 N. Rampart St., New Orleans, LA 70116, on Saturday, September 23, 2023, from 12-4 p.m.

On behalf of my family The Parkers, when my father William (Jimmy) Parker was the President of the Prince of Wales when Joe came into the 12th ward embraced our family and second line culture, became of member of the Prince of Wales doing the later part of the 1960's until his passing. He became the President for a few years then passed the torch to my father's son my brother Jeffery Parker who is currently holding that position as of today. Joe was loved and respected as white boy Joe, he was very educated and loved humans not a race. He will always be remembered and loved by the uptown family and the citizens that he encountered, while living here in New Orleans, Louisiana a state he adopted since leaving his native Chicago. Again from the Parker, Brown & Sly Family. RIP Joe Stern.

My best friend's big brother died. Susie and I have been friends since childhood so Joe was always there - to tease us, let us annoy him, share wisdom, and stop us from doing anything really stupid...sometimes.

He became a teacher and I remember long passionate discussions about world problems. Of course, I mostly listened as he explained things like equality, justice, and inclusivity. He was always fighting for civil rights, and against oppression and tirelessly worked towards a more just society. Joe was the epitome of counterculture, advocating for peace in the midst of war, love in the face of hatred, and harmony amidst chaos. He lived a life that many found unconventional but always admirable.

I will always be the little girl who looked up to Joe Stern. Fly with the Angels Joe

Good evening Queen Dr Delia Young.
I am so sorry to hear about the death of your amazing and beloved father. May his precious soul rest in perfect peace in the Lord and may the good Lord grant you and your awesome family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

As you mourn, please be comforted by God's promises in the book of 1st Thessalonians. As believers in Christ Jesus, we know that, we will meet our loved ones again.

May you and your family be encouraged and blessed as you meditate on these promises of God.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

13. And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope. 14. For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died.

15. We tell you this directly from the Lord: We who are still living when the Lord returns will not meet him ahead of those who have died. 16. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves. 17. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever. 18. So encourage each other with these words.
Please accept my sincere condolences...
Dennis.
