Kenneth Edward Godfrey, 84, beloved husband, father, professional engineer and friend went peacefully to be with his Lord on August 18, 2021 at his home. He is predeceased by his father, Albert C. (Bill) Godfrey, and his mother, Della E. J. Godfrey.
Ken grew up in Norfolk, Virginia and graduated from Granby High School. He was a proud 1958 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and in 1970 received his Masters from George Washington University. After finishing college he served in the US Army and remained in the reserves as an Infantry Captain until 1968. He worked until 1964 as an engineer for the Army Corps of Engineers (COE) and then went into Federal Service. For 35 years, up to his retirement in 1992, he served in many positions leaving as the Director of the Engineering and Design Division. During his career he received many honors including the Tidewater Chapter of VSPE‘s Engineer of the Year Award (1977), The Naval Facilities Engineering Command Engineer of the Year (1981), the Naval Meritorious Civilian Service Award (1978), and the Superior Civilian Service Award (1992). Ken worked after retirement as a senior consultant for URS Corporation. He was an active supporter of the VMI Alumni Association, served on the Dean's Advisory Council of the ODU School of Engineering and held several positions in the Tidewater Chapter of the VSPE and the Engineers Club of Hampton Roads. He was an active member and supporter of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church of Virginia Beach where he served as the Chairman of the Trustees and on the Administrative and Financial Boards. He was an avid traveler exploring places as far flung as Europe, Iceland, Africa, the Caribbean, New Zealand, and even Antarctica.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife Lorna Sheppard Godfrey, his daughter Laura (Godfrey) Roy and her husband Greg, his daughter Tracy (Godfrey) Quast and his stepchildren Jennifer Muskat and her husband Charles, and James H. Johnson Jr. and his wife Jill. He is also survived by his grandchildren Jordan and Hayden, his step grandchildren Allen, Amanda, Alexandra, James, and Trey, and his step great grandchild Dune.
There will be a memorial service at Francis Asbury United Methodist Church, 1871 N. Great Neck Rd. in Virginia Beach, VA 23454 on Wednesday August 25th, 2021 at 3 pm. The family will greet guests in the social hall following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Francis Asbury United Methodist Church or to a
charity of your choice. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel is handling arrangements.
