Larry Daily (62) When a River-man passes it is said that he has 'Put out the long line and gone up the hill.' So it is with Larry Daily. Larry was a second generation river-man. He worked on the river and for the river all his life. Larry was born in Mulberry, AR in 1955. Larry graduated from Natchez Adams High School in 1973. He earned his degree from Mississippi State University in 1977. While in school he worked for the Natchez Boat Store and as a deck-hand for Canal Barge lines. After graduation, Larry went to work full time as a dispatcher for Canal Barge in New Orleans and soon married the love of his life, April Gossett. Over the next few years Larry worked his way up to Vice-President and April presented him with two lovely children, a daughter Allyson Maxine and a son John Peters. The family also adopted a magnificent dog named 'Gracie.'In 1997 Larry accepted a position as Senior Vice President for Alter Towing Company in Bettendorf, Iowa. His children attended and graduated from Pleasant Valley High school in Bettendorf. In the fall of 2000 he was promoted to president of Alter. During his professional career Larry served on the Board of American Waterways Operators, the Waterways Counsel. He was a two term president of the Davenport, Iowa Propeller Club. He served 3 presidents on the presidential committee for the Corp of Engineers. He was also a long time supporter of Living Lands and Waters and its founder Mr. Chad Pregracke. In 2013 with changing times on the river, Larry took the opportunity to retire with April and join daughter Ally back in New Orleans. With his passing it was decided to scatter his ashes in his beloved Mississippi River. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Those left to carry on his memory are his wife April, his daughter Allyson, a son John Peters, his parents Betty and Earl. It should be mentioned, that his father Captain Earl was a close hunting partner and a river-man himself. Also surviving is his sister Sandra Parker and her husband Roddy, a brother Richard and his wife Sara, a sister Cathy and 10 nieces and nephews. Larry's family would be honored if memorial donations were made in his name to Living Lands and Waters. Saddened to learn of Larry's death. I met Larry through his work at Alter Barge. He was a gracious host full of interesting stories and meaningful information. What a great representative he was of the towing industry. As a member of the Alter leadership team, he played a big role in making Alter a place that many loved to be a part of. His genuine, deep love of the Mississippi as a treasure was exhibited by his strong support of Living Lands and Waters.

Larry and I worked together for CBC at the Natchez Boat Store in Natchez, MS during our high school summer breaks. My father Eugene Hugg, and Larry's father Capt Earl Daily also worked there. Larry and I had large times together ; racing our motorcycles up the Port Road after getting off work in the afternoon. Prayers for the entire family.
