Lawrence Flanagan Obituary

Lawrence Martin Flanagan, "Larry", beloved husband of Frances Thornton Flanagan, entered eternal rest on the morning of Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at the age of 76, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on August 3, 1945 to the late Lawrence Emmett Flanagan and Ruth Olga Zatarain Flanagan. Larry was the devoted husband of Frances for 36 years. He is survived by his adoring children Russell Arthur (Amy), Steven Arthur (Angela), Kevin Arthur (Helena), Michael Flanagan, Larry Flanagan (Ann Marie), Rachael Flanagan (Dennis), and Ashley Flanagan (Michael), and daughter-in-law Suzi Flanagan. Larry was the epitome of a loyal patriarch. He leaves behind an incredible legacy including 20 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Ruth, son, Stephen Flanagan, and daughter-in-law, Amanda Arthur. A native of New Orleans, longtime resident of Kenner, and current resident of Mandeville for over 16 years, Larry graduated from L.E. Rabouin Memorial High School. He attended Delgado Community College where he earned a Certificate of Technical Studies for completion of the Electrician program. Larry was a lifelong loyal service member for his country. He was a soldier in the United States Army for 6 years, followed by 30 years of service in The United States Coast Guard. During his career, he earned the Coast Guard Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star. Before being honorably discharged on July 5, 2015, he earned Bicentennial Unit and Coast Guard Meritorious Team Commendations, Coast Guard Pistol Shot and Rifleman Sharpshooter ribbons. Larry was a skilled handyman, Electrician, and Maintenance Repairman. He has worked as a repairman for Frigidaire and Xerox, a maintenance engineer for Ochsner and LSU, a security guard at the New Orleans Naval Base, and everything in between. He was the true definition of a jack-of-all-trades. No job was too small or too big for a hard worker like Larry. Larry was loving, compassionate, and most of all a caring person to all. He was passionate about History and appreciated a good book. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and was a source of laughter and joy for all. However, his true passion was spending time with his loving family. He spent the majority of his last years caring daily for his doting great-granddaughters, Evelyn and Jordyn. Affectionately called "BoBo," he happily spent his days dancing, playing hide-and-seek, and graciously fulfilling their every request. Larry was unique and irreplaceable, well respected and liked, and will be deeply and dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. His jovial spirit and tender nature will remain in the many memories of his cherished friends and family until they meet him again.
