Uncle Lionel was a character that represented New Orleans and it traditions. He was a style setter and raconteur if one was lucky enough to catch him in the mood for conversation. It feels good to have known him.

We have many fond memories of "Unc", performing with him in Ascona, and jamming in New Orleans and drinking some "transmission fluid" together ! He will be missed all over the world, but he'll never be out of our hearts !!
We wish the family strength to cope with your loss, and remember him as the great person he was...

My favorite memory was watching Uncle Lionel approaching a young couple dancing, gently placing his hand on the young man's arm, and taking the man's bottle of beer to hold while they danced. I asked him about that. Uncle Lionel believed that men should not dance with women with a beer in their hand. Always a gentleman.

Daddy,
As I sit here thinking about you tears start to fall from my eyes not because you are gone because I have came to understand that your time here has came to an end you cant tell me that you didn't live you life to the FULLEST there was nothing and I mean Nothing that you didn't do r places you didn't go. You have touched so many people hearts and they will miss you but nobody will ever Miss you like me your Baby Girl. I can remember you always being there for me getting me dress for school, shining my boots to march for Wheatley, Bell & Clark, Coming to school when I was in trouble only to have my female making sweet eyes at you and they tell you that I was a good child, going to rite aid on a scooter that to push with your feet just to get a camera so that you can capture me leaving for my prom, catching the bus to my Sr. graduation bcuz you promise me that you was not going to miss it for the world just to name a few. Daddy I love you so much for always and I mean always finding the time for me and being there for me. I miss you so much and I know that you are looking down on me everyday and smiling so yes my heart is extremely heavy right now but I know as the time passes it will get better because you told me “not to cry and be strong” but the tears that is falling is not bcuz u r gone it tears bcuz I MISS YOU

One of the true examples of what a New Orleanian is, Uncle Lionel was one of a kind, often imitated, but never duplicated. A living legend has passed, and we are all the better for him having passed through our lives.
Rest in peace "Over in the Gloryland". It was a pleasure to be in your company on the band stand and off as well as on the road with the Treme' Brass Band. You'll never be forgotten.

Mr. Lionel "Uncle Lionel" Paul Batiste Sr. is a Nu'Awlins icon. He shined his rays upon New Orleans, unlike "pile-of-tricks" who possess the power to do so, making New Orleans a better place to live. His infectious smile, up-from-the-belly laughter, musical beats and Nu'Awlins' hand-dancing were all embodied into his effervescent persona, blessing all who came within his spere, inspiring and motivating young and old, here and aboard.
Heeey 'Legba, heeey 'Legba, heeey 'Legba, your "JU JU" is the most...
Peace...
