It was in 1961 when I met Luis. We worked together for the next several decades. He was an exceptional scientific and practicing physician, and a close friend. He will be missed.
My deepest sympathy to his family.

Dr. Higgins, thank you so very much for your beautiful tribute to Dr. Balart. I became acquainted with him while employed at LA Disability Determinations Services (DDS) in Metairie, LA. I had the pleasure of working with him from 1991-2005 before my transferring to Shreveport after Hurricaine Katrina. Dr. Balart was a wonderful man and Dr. (Chief Medical Consultant) to work with--I was proud that we also shared the same birthdate. I especially enjoyed the stories of his family, Fidel Castro and the Cuban revolution - a marvelous thing to hear about Cuba thru an eyewitness. My deapest and heartfelt condolences to the Balart family during your loss. God Bless.

Luis & Alina, my deepest sympathy for your loss. He was such a good friend to my father, there is no measure for how much that means. Please know that I feel your pain, it seems like my dad died only yesterday. I remember when your family first entered our lives and your dad had a profound effect on my dad for ever after. Live in peace, Mary Craighead

I will always remember Cucho smoking his cigar and talking about cuban politics. He always had an opinion about something and a smile. These are the memories that I have of him. Love, Ana Delia

My sincerest sympathy to Dr. Balart's entire family. I was a secretary in the Dept. of Medicine at LSUMC, where I had the pleasure of getting to know and enjoy his friendly, warm, and high spirited love of life and people. I still remember the day he officially became an American -- he brought little American flags for everyone to join in a parade of celebration around the 4th floor of the building where our offices were. He was truly an inspiration as to how to fully appreciate life. His story of how he escaped Cuba, and then got his family to the U.S. showed unbelievable courage, determination, and strength. May he always be remembered for his ever smiling face and kindness.

I first met Dr Balart when I was a junior medical student at LSU School of Medicine. He was our attending in rounds for Internal Medicine and Gastroenterolgoy. He was a dynamic teacher and person and I remember his beautiful blue eyes.He was definitly the gallant Cuban physician and over the years he mentioned his gratefulness to Dr Gordon McHardy for assisting him in transitioning to the USA with employment after the difficult days of the Cuban revoluation.
Last week while driving a long distance I was listening to a CD of Opera and Best Arias and thought of him and that I should call and get him a copy of this CD. He truly loved Opera, WWNO-FM , music and the Arts. On the wall of his office wasa beautiful pciture taken in Paris either at the chapel of St Denis or La Chapelle
He had lots of stories and he loved Baseball. He would shake his head at his friends who were not following certain baseball teams and would say "How can one be a Cuban and not love baseball!"
The mantra "let me tell you about my grandchildren( and children)" applied to him. He ws excited about all of them . he had lots of pictures of them and loved being silly for them and taking trips and buying them things. He loved to travel.
Family was very important to him and he was loyal to all.
Having later worked with him ,and for all the folks at the State of LA/DDS,he was definitely excited and passionate about what we did. He had very strong opinions about things but that was his style. He was our leader, after all.
Dr Luis Balart lived a very full life and I am sure that heaven will never be the same with him there and his storytelling.
My prayers and condolences to his family.
