Louis Nugent Obituary

NUGENT Louis ''The Nooge'' Nugent, Esquire III plus, died on January 14 after a courageous battle with colon cancer. Born October 6, 1948 at Hotel Dieu, New Orleans, LA. Grew up on S. Telemachus St. and attended ''Sacred Heart of Jesus'' grammer school, Warren Easton High and West Jeff High School. He entered the US Marine Corps in 1966 and gladly exited in 1970 to attend UNO where he secured a B.S. in Geology (like a proud Pa Pa), Louis ""The Nooge'' Nugent aspired and self appointed hisself as King of the ''Original'' Krewe of Motha Roux, which would march ahead of the Krewe of Endymion without a permit, simple reason why, at that time the cost of the ''fine'' was much cheaper than the cost of the permit which included hiring policeman, etc. An acknowledged ''Existence Specialist'' and ''Sleeping Millionaire,'', he also ruled as President and Promulgator of ''Blind, Cripple and Crazy, LLC'' and ''Take My Wife Please, LLC.'' After stints with Exxon, a New Orleans school secondary math and science professor, the US Postal Office and the US Postal Inspectors, in 1980, he landed in the New Orleans Fire Department (achieving captain status) and simultaneously obtained his real estate broker's license (as ''The Land Lord''). He loved both jobs dearly and worked under the motto of the late Mother Teresa, whom he often quoted as ''Work without Love is Slavery.'' The Nooge additionally served as a charter board member of the now defunct Crescent City Bank and Trust. Also in 1980, the Nooge wed the lovely Martha ''Sweetie'' Bell Nugent at the New Orleans Jazz Fest to the beat of Greg Stafford and Dr. Michael White. The Nooge, a coffee house frequenter and floundering father of Mandeville Free Thinkers Society, became especially known for his fountain of wisdom at 78 rpms. This special wisdom that you can't just read about. As a New Orleans Saints ticketholder since 1967, like Buddy D, he did not live long enough to ever see them win a Super Bowl. Nooge assimilated and matriculated through many memorable bus rides with numerous luminaries including the late Ernie and living Antoinette K-Doe, Bluesman J. Monque 'D, tv's Ronnie ''Naturally N'Awlins'' Virgets and Al ''Carnival Time'' Johnson. The Nooge constantly sought evidence as a conspiracy theorist of the JFK murder plot carefully sifting through books and video tapes while staying under the US government radar. He loved ''all that is New Orleans'', the music, the houses, the people, the smell, the essence. The Nooge was a rare species, found only in New Orleans amongst the other rare specimens in New Orleans. A true card carrying ''Character!'' Be sure to wear your struttin shoes and socks! Nooge was the beloved husband of Martha ''Sweetie'' Bell Nugent and the father of Ryan Irish and Kyle Patrick Nugent. The son of the late Louis M. ''Liver 'n Onions'' Nugent, the late Margaret ''Face'' Hand and stepfather William ''Apehead'' Thompson. The brother of Margaret Gilmore and Pat Bell. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral service. St. Timothy on the Northshore United Methodist Church, 335 Asbury Lane, Mandeville, LA. on Tuesday, January 17, visitatiion from 2-5 pm, church service at 5pm followed by a reception until 8pm. Arrangements by Schoen Funeral Home, Covington, LA.

After my very first day on the New Orleans Fire Department, Old Engine #23 on Washington Avenue, I'm proud to say that Firefighter Louis "The Nooge" Nugent relieved me the next morning. In walks this unique physical specimen of firefighting prowess, decked out in an official navy blue NOFD tee shirt, decidedly non regulation shorts stopping at his skinny mid thighs, and a pair of pink Chuck Taylor canvas sneakers. "What's up, Bruh? Welcome to the job!"
More than any other event, that's when I KNEW this job was gonna be one of the GREATEST GOOD TIMES in my life. . .
And it was. . .
Thanks, Nooge,
By the way, you and I both know you aint gone. . . you're just matriculating on the left wing quadrant of that sixth and a half dimension Neutral Ground. . .

Hey Nooge! Throughout the entire Saints Miracle Season this past year I never forgot that first play off game in 1989. You got us 10 tickets when there were NONE to be had. I did not take the picture of you after that game with real tears running down your face. But I know that you were the one responsible for those 12 men in the Vikings Huddle that got us there!!
Miss you pal, and all your craziness. I am doing my best to carry on in your Tradition and Doc is doing a great job of keeping the Nooge's Name and Memory alive.

Hey Lou, keep thinking about you. your best friend Doc seems that he is living out all your fun and things in life...at least I think so... i never hear from him...even though I've asked him to keep in touch and have called him. Well, that is just life. People move on. Right? That is what you would tell me. You also told me that other people's realities are not mine...sooo that further proves it...hmmm...you were wise...you funny Louis....I miss you. You were my favorite brother in law....okay it must have been because you were my ONLY brother in law, but that did make it easier, right?...All I know is I miss you. I am going to see you soon. My sympathy to Louie's family.I knew him from Mid City and real estate, I gave him his first hair cut when he was just a child and later had many dealings with him in real estate. As many of you know he was wild and crazy, who else could sell a house with such a colorful add in the Times Picayune... you all know what I mean. His humour will be missed. Look out God, here he comes. Until we meet again, sitting on the stoop. Joe Zaffuto.

It was an honour to have met and known Louis the husband of my stepdaughter Martha. I never forgot their weddingday that I attended with my husband Charles R.Bell and our daughter Bianca who was three at the time. It was such a beautiful day with the live New Orleans jazzband in the garden of their house, I will never forget it. Louis was a wonderful husband to Martha and the best father to his sons.

May his soul wander the galaxy in peace with his son Ryan Irish.

All my love to Martha and Kyle,

I dedicate this poem to my very dear Son-in-Law:

COMING INTO GRIEF

One blackbird flying stark

against a cold grey sky--

as we glide our steel grey car

along grey asphalt drive

While I

While I

Weep tears, oh, fear grey tears

against unwitting cheek

from cold grey eyes

like slow incessant rain

from these low clouded skies.

We know where we go, we cry

but he knows not, nor why.

Dark silhouette against that sky,

he flies his heart intact--

Not I

Not I

I hadn't seen the Nooge for years and then I saw him in the parking lot at Winn Dixie in Mandeville. We talked for half an hr. or so. I went to W. Easton with him and I will never forget how some of the teachers would clear desks out of the way and Louis would get up and do the James Brown and scream. He created a lot of laughter wherever he went. Truly a one of a kind.

George Maronge Jr.

January 22, 2006

All our sympathies go to the Nugent family. I was at Easton with The Nooge and I saw him on at least one occasion after '66 at a class reunion. Louis stole the show with his 3-piece sear-sucker suit -- the slacks were shorts, with knee high white socks and black shoes. Louis impressed me as a guy who set his own tempo and direction in life. He was a trend setter, not a follower. Perhaps he is the personification of what New 'Awlins is all about. I'm proud to have known him and my prayers are with his family.

Marth and Kyle:

What can we say about a couple that opened their home to perfect strangers from SF. Louis made us lifelong fans of "New Aulins" and the culture, music, jazzfest and especially the food. RIP King of the Krewe of Motha Reux! Let the good times roll!!!

I met Louie Nugent because my husband is an Easton Eagle too. Alan and I both send our sincere condolences to his family.

One afternoon 10 yrs ago, I was driving along Marconi with 5 kids in my car and saw Louie getting out of his car. The Nooge showed me that when you see a tornado barrelling up behind you, pull over to the side of the road so you can turn around and get a real good look before getting out of Dodge. Thanks for the tornado, Louie.

The Nooge is missed by more than he knew.

12 Things I learned from Louie….

I learned Coffee Rani customers are friends, and it’s not about the Coffee.

I learned man can wear 2 different colored converse high-tops at the same time.

I learned that the gospel tent is a place to rest, revel in old time religion, and receive the Holy Spirit in true fashion… even if 5000 of God’s people are watching.

I learned that Ernie K-Doe was a Charity Hospital baby.

I learned to expand my vocabulary with words like matriculate, and manawgahide.

I learned that dancing at the K-Doe lounge can make you life long friends.

I learned if I get lost, to go to the flag pole, or look Stage Right.

I learned the back streets of New Orleans, gained entrance to the

Sacred Motha Roux Hall, Smelled the sweet trumpet flowers on a hot spring night, and tasted the cold beer of Liuzza’s.

I learned that money is nothing when having a good time.

I learned that when I needed a volunteer to mix shrimp remoulade for Kids in Crisis, I made 1 phone call to Louie. He was there for me, and even brought another volunteer, Dave.

I learned to feel honored to be with the renowned Nooge, Big Tweezer, ever-loving……Louie Nugent.

I learned to love, dance, rejoice, mourn, celebrate, pray, and hope.

Thank you, God, for Louie.

It seems I knew Louie all my life. He was and always will be the ultimate New Orleans Dude. Everything from those crazy bus rides in the 70's,to the infamous Red Keds all over town. We "did it all" with the Nooge at the lead.Who could ever forget him confronting the NOPD inside that Grocery at Canal and Carrolton saying, "What you gonna do arrest us ALL?" The Cops just broke up laughing and on we went secondlining with the Monkey on Nooge's back, and Tuba Fats blowing that horn INSIDE that store!!

Last time I saw him was over here at the Pelican Club in Mandeville, and he really looked GOOD. We made plans to march this Mardi Gras with the St Ann club from down in the 9 long before Katrina came along. So I hope many of his pals will come out and "do it for the Nooge" this year.

I will miss the crazy , insane, and brilliantly concocted "put ons" and sly looks after he had unloaded one of his Nooge "mind blower" thoughts upon me. There was a true genius inside that goofy front.

He was as genuine as Hap Glaudi, McKenzies fried chicken, Al Scramuzza and them aints blowing yet another season. Louie never quit, he never stopped being a genuine New Orleans Character. And oh how he loved them saints. After our first playoff game in 1988 ended in the the almost predictable disaster, Louie was up there in the high seats with tears just running down his face. He loved them aints.

I sure will miss him. And will make sure the band includes him in our tribute this Mardi Gras day at the Moonwalk.

No one ever head more fun than Louie. He was REAL New Orleans.

A Poem for the Nooge

***********************

Come

by Suzanne Batchelor

Come brother; join me

We’ll dance til dawn and have some fun,

We’ll laugh with the moon then welcome the sun.

Come brother; join me

We’ll swim in the ocean with birds overhead

We’ll ponder life’s mystery and what lies ahead.

Come brother; join me

We’ll don our sneakers for a night on the town.

We’ll twist and shout with 78s abound.

Come brother; join me

We’ll cheer our team in black and gold

We’ll stomp the ground for players bold.

Come brother; join me

We’ll ride the bus and matriculate

We’ll lament K-Doe and contemplate.

Come brother; join me

We’ll put green bows on purple doves

Then lay to rest with white cotton gloves.

Come brother; join me

Come

Martha,

You are one of the strongest women I know and you have been through so much these last few years. But I think you were in some way one of the luckiest people in the world for being able to share your life with the Nooge. After all you have been gifted and annointed to share most of the time with a true local "existing" icon. What a treasure! You are the most envied. I don't know anyone who experienced life quite like the Nooge. He made his very own mud pie from his very own mud and we are the lucky ones who got a taste. He will never be gone. God Bless the Nooge and us for being able to share.

Wow! What a new beginning for an already marvelous life! It is often difficult to let go those we adore, admire, and love with all of our hearts. It is no different with Mr. Louis. God often send angels of life and love to bless our hearts and Mr. Louis is no different. Even after he has departed the physical realm, his humor still brings smiles to our faces. We are truely blessed to have this God-serving angel enter our lives, no matter how long or brief it may have been. Mr. Louis is a remarkable man and we all know he is partying in Heaven with our Lord. But, in the words of Shakespeare, "Parting is [still] such sweet sorrow." Let us not morn for our loss, but rejoice that "the good and faithful servent" has gone home to rest in the never-ending peace of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

Mrs. Martha, if you are reading this, please know that the prayers of my family and myself are with you and yours always. I am blessed to know you and your family. Much love in Christ.
