Lula Johnson Obituary

JOHNSON Lula Young Johnson, wife of 55 years of Dr. Joseph Benjamin Johnson, died Sunday, July 22, 2012 in Fayetteville, Georgia. She was a native of Hammond, Louisiana and was born of the union between Ardes Bennett Young and Oliver Young. Raised in a Christian home, Lula attended church regularly and as a young child recognized the need for Jesus Christ in her life. She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized at McMichael A.M.E. Church in Amite, Louisiana at the age of ten. Over the course of many years and many moves to various states, Lula always sought a church home, and upon moving to Atlanta in 1992 she and her husband placed their membership at St. Mark A.M.E. Church in Atlanta, Georgia, where she served faithfully as a member of that congregation until her death. Born October 12, 1935, Lula received her elementary and high school education in the public schools of Tangipahoa Parish. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in elementary Education at Grambling College, a Master's of Education in Elementary Education at Southern University and a Masters plus 30 from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Lula was an outstanding teacher in the Tangipahoa Parish School System in Louisiana, the Boulder Valley School System in Boulder, Colorado, and was an elementary school guidance counselor in the Lincoln Parish School System in Louisiana. Lula was a lifetime member of the National Grambling State University Alumni Association, a member of Alpha Delta Kappa and Phi Delta Kappa Educational Associations, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Louisiana Education Association and the National Education Association. Lula was also a lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and a member of St. Mark African Methodist Episcopal Church, where she served in the Women's Missionary Society and on the Stewardess Board and Day Care Board. She was honored as an outstanding alumnus of a historically black college by the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education in 2001. She leaves to cherish her memory, a husband, Dr. Joseph B. Johnson, three devoted daughters, Yolanda Johnson (James) Dixon, Esq. of Baton Rouge, LA, Juliet Johnson of Jackson, MS, and Julie L. Johnson, M.D. of Atlanta, GA; a loving son, Joseph B.(Karen) Johnson, III of Alexandria, VA., a sister, Gladys Martin of Hammond, Louisiana, a sister-in-law, Joyce Lewis of New Orleans and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ardes Bennett and Oliver Young, and one brother, Alexander Porter. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 28, 2012 at St. Mark A.M.E. Church at 3605 Campbellton Road, Atlanta, Georgia. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated Omega Omega Service at !0:00 a.m.

To Dr. Johnson and Family,
I am so sorry to hear the loss of Mrs. Johnson. I remember her as her time as The First Lady of Talladega College. She was always a classy woman of composure, sincerity, and love. Mrs. Johnson seemed to always have a kind word, a friendly smile, and a sympathetic ear to students who where away from home and were missing their family, especially their Mothers.
God has seen to take one His sweet angels home and I pray that He will give you the strength that you need to be able to make it through your time of grief.
Peace be unto my Soror and peace be unto you all.
