Lynn Hickman Obituary

HICKMAN Lynn Eugene Hickman, M.D., was born June 14, 1936, and died February 19, 2012. He was the only child of the late Albert Eugene and Goldie Hatten Hickman of Douglas, Arizona. Dr. Hickman graduated from Douglas High School in 1954, the University of Arizona as a member of Phi Beta Kappa Society in 1958 and Tulane Medical School in 1962. He was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He served his internship at Martin Army Hospital at Ft. Benning, Georgia, from 1962-63. Upon completion, he was assigned to Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, for a residency in internal medicine from 1963-66. Lyster Army Hospital at the United States Army Aviation Training Center at Ft. Rucker, Alabama, was Dr. Hickman's next assignment. From September 1966 through June 1968 he served as Chief of the Department of Medicine and Outpatient Services, and as a flight surgeon. From Ft. Rucker he was assigned to Vung Tau, Vietnam, as Deputy Commander of the 36th Evacuation Hospital from June 1968 to June 1969, and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Dr. Hickman chose to live in New Orleans and practice internal medicine at Sellers and Sanders Clinic in 1969 and through its merger with Mahorner Clinic in 1987. He joined the East Jefferson Hospital Physician Network in 1994. In 1998 Dr. Hickman accepted the position of Medical Director of Louisiana Medicare Part B, and in 2009 he joined Humana, Inc. as Regional Medical Director for the Medicare Health Services Organization, a position he held until his death. A Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Hickman was presented the Laureate Award by the Louisiana Chapter of the American College of Physicians in 2006. He was a member of the American Medical Association and the Orleans Parish Medical Society, serving as the organization's president from 1988-89 and as a representative to the Board of Governors from 1977-83 and 1985-91. Dr. Hickman was a member of the Louisiana State Medical Society and served as its secretary-treasurer from 1992-96. As a member of the Louisiana Society of Internal Medicine, he served as president from 1978-80 and as newsletter editor from 1980-96, receiving a merit award for outstanding newsletter editing from the American Society of Internal Medicine in 1984. Dr. Hickman was also a member of the New Orleans Academy of Internal Medicine. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan; his son, Lynn Eugene Hickman Jr. and daughter in-law, Tiffany; cousins Madelyn Miller, Carol Hickman, Bob Hickman and Duron Hatten; and an uncle, Robert E. Hickman. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Memorial Service at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., on Monday, February 27, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. until service time. For some unknown reason, I just found this obituary for Dr. Hickman. I was an Army physician in Vung Tau in 1968 and served with him at the 36th Evacuation Hospital.Even after all of these years, I remember him as a fine gentleman and talented physician. May he continue to rest in peace.
