Malcolm Sidney Peters

PETERS Malcolm Sidney Peters, age 89, died July 18, 2012, in Clemson, SC, of kidney failure. He was born in New Orleans, LA, October 15, 1922, the son of Sidney and Luella Peters. He was predeceased by his wife Jean, who died November 18, 2008. He is survived by his two sons, Randy Peters (Tiffany, daughters Rachel, Allison, Caitlin) and Chris Peters (Alice, daughters Susannah, Elisabeth), both of Clemson, SC. Malcolm was a graduate of Fortier High School, Tulane University where he played varsity basketball, and Columbia University's Teachers College. When his father died, Malcolm was 15 and "rescued" by the Presbyterian Church and the YMCA; he was devoted to both for the rest of his life. He served as a gunnery officer on the USS Stephen Potter in the Pacific Theater of WWII and was awarded the bronze star. Malcolm finished his education and took a job with the YMCA in Houston, TX, where he met Jean, his wife of 58 years. After working with the Y in Milwaukee, WI, and Louisville, KY, he returned home to New Orleans as the director of the downtown Y and later became the Executive Director of the New Orleans Metropolitan YMCA. After, retiring from the Y in 1979, he served for ten years as the initial director and then 13 years as the board treasurer of the Westminster Tower in Kenner, LA, a retirement home sponsored by the Presbyterian Church. He and Jean left New Orleans in 2003 to be with their sons in Clemson, SC. Malcolm loved to play golf, fish, tell jokes, and was a devoted member of Parkway Presbyterian Church in Metairie. He was a loyal and kind soul who loved God and people. He asked to have his ashes placed in the family tomb in New Orleans (private).
