Marvin Gresse Obituary

Marvin Louis Gresse, Sr., age 66, was born on June 25, 1957 in New Orleans, Louisiana and was a lifelong resident of Bucktown. He passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2024. He was a graduate of Bonnabel High School and was a licensed master plumber for over 50 years. Marvin started in the plumbing business with his father and brother. They spent over 20 years working offshore for Shell Oil Company. Marvin eventually became the owner of Merlin W. Gresse Plumbing, Inc. Marvin always went out of his way to help all of his customers, friends and family with anything they needed, no matter what. Marvin always made sure everyone else was taken care of before himself. Marvin was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons, family and close friends. Marvin loved traveling to the beach, hunting camps and fishing camps with his friends and family. Marvin's favorite hobby was enjoying spending time on his back porch with his wife, who he truly loved and adored, and with his grand dog "Bandit". Marvin is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Arrin Aucoin Gresse; his children, Marvin Louis Gresse, Jr (Patricia) and Jeffrey Michael Gresse; his grandson, Burke Joseph Boudreau; his sisters, Merrill Gresse Frost (Lewis) and Annie Gresse Ussery (Phil); as well as numerous family, cousins, brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, his grand dog "Bandit", and his beloved friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Merlin W. Gresse, Sr. and Adele Rohr Gresse, as well as his brother Merlin W. Gresse, Jr. Friends and relatives are invited to attend his Celebration of Life Service on Thursday, March 14, 2024 at 11:00 AM at the Garden of Memories Funeral Home & Cemetery 4900 Airline Dr., Metairie, LA. 70001. Visitation 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM, Mass at 11:00 AM, followed by internment. In lieu of flowers, please donate to: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in the name of Marvin Louis Gresse, Sr. at:

It was a funeral unmatched by any other. Marvin Gresse's funeral was unforgettable in EVERY way (including the flower arrangement in the image of Bandit, Marvin's grand-dog and faithful companion). It was the most well-attended funeral I have ever attended or expect to attend in the future. Thirty seconds before mass began, I leaned over to my sister and said, " I have been to many funerals in my life, but none with this many people." And just 30 seconds after that, the priest started the mass with the same sentiment. He said it was a testament to just how many lives Marvin, Sr. touched...and I agree. But what I'd like to add is that I believe it is also a testament to the incredible, positive parenting of Adele and Merlin Gresse to their four children: Merrill, Annie, Marvin and Merlin, Jr. (Brother). How else can one explain the fact that they are four of the nicest, most caring people in our midst and that they have each filtered that parenting down to their own children and grandchildren.

As with every member of the Merlin and Adele Gresse family I have known since the 1960s, Marvin was ALWAYS very kind, polite, helpful, friendly and gracious. It is with much sadness that I extend my heartfelt condolence to the members of the Gresse family knowing how devastating the loss of Marvin must be for them all.
