Mary Hymel Obituary

Mary Ann Hymel, 89, of New Orleans and Mandeville, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2023, surrounded by her devoted family in Mandeville, Louisiana. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and dear friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her father, Luke B. Leggio, DDS, her mother, Mary Patricia Leggio, and her beloved husband, Roland J. Hymel Jr. She is survived by her four children, Roland III (Robyn), Rick (Beverly), Randy (Charlotte) and Mary Piper (J.R.), and twelve grandchildren, Cassidy Hymel (Chantel), Shawn Hymel, Margaux Hymel, Jason Piper (Elizabeth), Roland Hymel IV, Rhett Hymel (Lindsay), Jack Hymel, Randall Hymel, Connor Clarke, Mary Grace Carr (Nicholas), Leigh Bruno (Nick), Brent Thibodeaux, and her nine great-grandchildren. After graduating from Holy Angels Academy, Mary Ann attended Loyola University where she participated in Archery. It was at Loyola University that she met the love of her life and future husband. In 1951, Mary Ann was honored to reign as the Queen of the Crew of Babylon. Mary Ann proudly volunteered her time at The Historic New Orleans Collection, and she assisted her father in his dental practice. She also held the position of President of the Ladies Insurance Auxiliary Group. Mary Ann's infectious smile and vivacious spirit lit up every room she entered. She never met a stranger and happily struck up conversations with friends, new and old. Her kind and forgiving nature led her to see the good in everyone she met. Faith and family were at the heart of Mary Ann's life. She was a longtime parishioner of Mary Queen of Peace Church and found great joy in volunteering for the church. More than anything, she cherished time spent with her extended, loving family. She was extremely proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, supporting their many activities and accomplishments. Mary Ann will be remembered for her excellent cooking skills, especially her homemade meatballs, lasagna, and, of course, her cocktails. She loved entertaining and bringing people together for family gatherings, holidays, and celebrations of all kinds. Gathering her family at their home in Waveland, MS was one of Mary Ann's greatest pleasures in life. Mary Ann was truly a great woman whose impact will be forever felt by her family, who love her dearly. She was a compassionate woman whose warmth and zest for life will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. The kindness she showed others leaves a lasting legacy. Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church at 1501 W. Causeway Approach, Mandeville, LA on Monday, July 31 at 10:30 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11: 30 a.m. A private interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery at 5190 Canal Blvd., New Orleans, LA.
