Mary Theresa Howard LeFevre obituary

Mary LeFevre Obituary

LeFEVRE Mary Theresa Howard LeFevre lived with ovarian cancer for 3 years before her death on March 28, 2010. She was born February 19, 1948 in Shreveport, LA and resided there until January, 1970 when she moved to New Orleans. Theresa was preceded in death by her parents Rosa Lee LeVasseur and Otto Delmas Howard and siblings LeVasseur D., J. Ernest, and Gerald W. Howard. She is survived by her beloved husband of 39 years, Joseph C. LeFevre, and by siblings Mary Madeline Elford (Leonard), Rose Marie Black and Francis X. Howard as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues. After receiving her bachelor's degree with teacher certification in social sciences and English from Northwestern State College, Theresa taught at L. W. Higgins High School, McDonogh 28 Junior High and Samuel J. Green Middle School. After acquiring certification in library science from the University of New Orleans she served as librarian at Samuel J. Green Middle School. Theresa became a member of the Louisiana Retired Teacher's Association after retiring from Orleans Parish public schools in 1991. She continued studies at the University of New Orleans in history, archives and records management and worked on a conservation project for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. She was subsequently employed at The Historic New Orleans Collection as Registrar of Manuscripts and Executive Assistant from 1993 through 2009. Theresa expressed gratitude for all the support given to her. In accord with her wishes, her closing moment was private. She requests that, in lieu of visitation or flowers, those wishing to remember her do so by sharing a kindness with someone in the community. Please sign the guestbook at www.schoencanalstreet.com.

We had such a wonderful time in New Orleans last St. Patrick’s day, one that we will cherish forever. The vitality, strength, courage, and loving nature that Aunt Theresa portrayed are an inspiration in our lives. I’ve never met someone who so enjoyed life, the culture of her city, and friendship of others. The world became a little less fun and the heavens a lot brighter, we will miss you terribly. – Love, Ryan, Kara, and Samantha Gorney

We always will have fond memories of "Aunty T" down in New Orleans. She had unending hospitality, was fun, energetic, creative and always able to teach us something about the culture (of anyone and anywhere!). Most of all, Aunt Theresa had a gift for making other people feel special. We hope that she knew how special she was in our lives.

From photography to linguistics, Aunt Theresa had a great attention to detail. Many years later, I still remember her comments and smile when I hear someone compliment something as "not bad," or better still, "not half bad." While I will miss her terribly, I will treasure the memories of our visits, memories which I must say are... quite good.

She loved life, people, music, Mardi Gras, a good glass of wine, and never failed to give a kind word, a smile, a poke, a jab, or a laugh when she saw it was needed. I'll always remember her with the greatest of fondness, be proud that she was my mentor, but best of all, I feel blessed that she was my friend.

Whether it was a summer visit by "J&T" to the farm, or those far to few of times I was lucky enough to visit them in Nawlin's, each occasion was so very special. As I read the previous post, I thought I could repeat most all of them, to me that is what made Aunt Theresa so special. She had a unmatched way of connecting with all of us no matter how different we may be. We'll miss you terribly, but will remember you always.

Aunt Theresa will be greatly missed by the St. Louis LeFevres. Although we never got a chance to do Mardi Gras, we visited New Orleans as a family. I remember Aunt Theresa going with us to the park and laughing as the 50,000 pigeons (maybe not that many) covered us as we tried to feed them. She introduced us to the delicious benet, which is the most wonderful dessert.(Ever!) We left New Orleans as kids with a million Mardi Gras beads and a lifetime of memories. Our only regret is that we never got the chance to bring our children to visit.
We love you Aunt Theresa. You will always be in our memories and our prayers.

Aunt Theresa always had a unique and wonderful way of looking at the world. Her photography was one of the ways she embodied this. When taking pictures, I find myself wondering how Aunt Theresa would see the shot. This is only one of many memories I will always have of her. She will be greatly missed.
