Maybel Royer "Mae Mae" Gauthier obituary

Maybel Gauthier Obituary

Maybel Royer Gauthier or Mae Mae as she was known to so many, passed away of natural causes on April 18, 2015 at 9:30 in the evening. She was a wonderful cook, loved her trips to the casino with her friends, loved to travel and was fiercely independent. She was a career woman before it was popular, working for the GSA for 40 years, all of it with the US Navy. The last position she held was as the Director of Purchasing for the 8th Naval Commandant in New Orleans, LA. She was married to Burton J. Gauthier who was a WWII Veteran, having served in the Army Air Corp. He was a recipient of a Bronze Star. They had two children, Susan and Andrew Gauthier. After retiring from the GSA when she was 58 years old, Mae Mae lived another 32 years. She was one of the Greatest Generation, working all her life to retire so she could travel and do all the things she put on hold, making a life for her family. Before she died, she made it to her three "bucket list" places: Paris, FR; Alaska; and the Grand Canyon. Her nephews William and John Denning made sure she was able to live in her home until her death at The Sanctuary Passages. She outlived her twin, her two children, her husband and most of her closest friends. She lived a long and full life. She is survived by her nephews William Denning and John Denning; niece, Cathy Denning Sprague and nephew-in-law Donald Sprague ;great nieces Amanda Denning Smith and Jeanne Denning. There will be a visitation at the family home, 1925 Concord Road, Gretna, LA, on May 5, 2015 from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM. A private interment in Greenwood Cemetery will take place at a later date.

MaeMae, I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the fact you are no longer on this earth with us, but instead sitting next to God watching over all of us. You are the strongest woman I have ever known. You were the grandmother I never had. You helped raise me, mold me, and shape me into the woman I am today. Without you I don't know what my life would be. Saying goodbye is never an easy thing to do, but death is just a part of life and we are just passing through on our way to an eternity with our Savior. You took a piece of me, of my heart with you. That emptiness now filled with so many wonderful memories. There will never be a day that goes by that I will not think of you and smile knowing I have one heck of an angel watching over my family and me. You are one of my greatest blessings, thank you for everything you did for me. Give Uncle Burt a HUGE hug for me. I love you, always and forever.

I have such fond memories of Miss Maybel. She and her family were my parents' and my next door neighbors in Terrytown, La for years...lots of good memories. What I remember the most was Miss Maybel taking the time to talk to me when she would see me...I was a child back then. Such a nice person. She and my mom were friends, and they spent a lot of time visiting. I'm thankful that the Gauthier family were our friends and neighbors. I remember Miss Maybel as a good mother to her children. And, she was an amazing cook. I remember the great times when she and her husband would invite my family over to their house during the holidays...so much fun and lots of delicious food...memories that I'll always cherish.

I thank God for the time that I had to know Miss Maybel. She will always remain in my heart.

Mae Mae was a second mother to me. Susie and I meet when I was seven years old. We lived on the same street. We remained friends through our entires lives, and my friendship with Mae Mae spanned 50 years. She taught me the same values she instilled in her children. She would have me sleep over, feed me, take me everywhere from the grocery store, restaurants, Mardi Gras Parades, to vacation in the Smokey Mountains. Her twin "Annabel"and she were very close, and traveled together on many trips with her family. Mae Mae was always very loving towards me, and I would call her often when I was away in the military, and always visit her when I came home, often staying with her. She was very close to me and I dearly loved her as I know she did me. We shared so many fond memories togetherher. She lived a full life and I will truly miss her. There will always be a special place in my heart for her and her family.
