Michael Labat Obituary

Michael Laydell Labat, Sr., 81, of Bluffton, SC passed away peacefully at his home with his loving wife of 58 years, Constance Ray, by his side on Sunday, March 19. Mike was a loving husband to Connie and a devoted father to his two children, Michael Labat, Jr. and Tracy Labat Porter. Mike was a proud and doting grandfather (affectionately known as "Pops") to Phoebe, Zoe and Connie Labat. He was a father-in-law to Christine Tromans and Edward Porter and Doggy Granddad to Franco, Rocky and Stella. Mike was born in New Orleans, LA to parents Victor and Jeanne Labat. He was the youngest son and leaves behind two older brothers, Victor and Joseph Labat, their spouses, Deidre and Dorothy, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. Mike and Connie met at Xavier University from which they both graduated. They married in 1965 in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. They started their new family and careers in the 7th Ward of New Orleans and shortly thereafter relocated to Maplewood, New Jersey. They moved to West Linn, Oregon for four years where they met more life-long friends. Twelve years ago Mike and Connie retired to their beautiful home in Bluffton, South Carolina. They were so deeply in love; soulmates feels like an understatement. Their remarkable love for each other was radiant and evident to All! In his early years, Mike worked as a Pharmacist and then moved into Pharmaceutical Sales. He was a trailblazer, being the first black Pharmaceutical Representative hired in the south by Hoffman La Roche. Mike took tremendous pride in being one of the Top Award Winning and Leading District Sales Managers at every company he worked for. During that time, he nurtured, coached and mentored all those who worked for him and all the peers he was partnered with. Although he was proud of his career, he would tell you his greatest accomplishment was his marriage to his best friend, Connie, whom he loved with all his heart. He also enjoyed dressing stylishly, driving his Corvettes, spending time with friends and more recently playing poker on Friday nights - and, of course, being the life of the party. Mike was a quick-witted, fun-loving and truly hilarious man! He was adored by everyone who knew him. He loved his family, his Hampton Hall Community, Louisiana and New Jersey family and friends, Kappa Brothers, work family and all of what life had to offer. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, April 15 from 12:00 pm-2:00 pm at St. Katherine Drexel Chapel on the Xavier University campus: 3932 Pine Street, New Orleans, Louisiana 70125. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Xavier University of Louisiana in the name of Michael L. Labat, Sr. at https://giving.xula.edu/.

Today is Saturday Octobet 19, 2024. I'm again looking at this snapshot of Mike's life. Although all is relevant, I close my eyes and see that BIG Smile of his, him hugging Everybody he knew & just met, his positive words about everyone he knew, and his genuine love of his family. Not a day goes by that I don't think of him and the world seems empty without him. But then in steps one of his jokes, his laughter, that big ole smile, his big hug and the world is a bit better. I miss you my love every minute, every hour of every day!

Michael was a great and true loyal friend and pal as hew would refer to me as. I met Mike in 1958 at the annual Louisiana Boys State (Bayou) program, held on the Southern University Campus, Baton Rouge, LA for all high school young men who had finished their junior year in high school. Our friendship became more solid when I met Mike again at Xavier's senior day activity in spring of 1959, and then subsequently enrolling at Xavier for our Freshman year, Fall of 1959. I did not complete my studies at Xavier having joined an Air Force Reserve unit in New Orleans, which gave me the opportunity to continue my friendship with Mike as I had to travel to New Orleans once a month for Reserve meeting and drill. During my many visits to New Orleans during the early 60's is when I met Mike wonderful wife Connie and we immediately hit it off as friends. Mike and I did many things together during my days in New Orleans. I subsequently joined the U.S. Air Force as a full time Airman, where I started my family. Believe it or not, Mike and I would write each other letters as a way of keeping in touch. I was able to attend Mike and Connie's wedding in June 1965. A solid friendship foundation was built until this very day. A few years ago, I visited Mike and Connie at their Blufton, SC retirement home. Mike's passing is a big loss to me. Indeed, all the accolades and nice words said about Mike are true words and I was able to share many of those special times with him. Our friendship as Pals (as we like to refer to us as) is a long, long history and I could go on and on. My prayers and thoughts go out to Connie and their family. Through the mercy of God, may his soul rest in peace

It is with deep regrets that the funeral was held and no one in my family knew about it. I remember how Mike loved playing cards with Beverly's uncle Louis Fletcher. I haven't seen Mike in later years but I will always remember his big smile Rest in peace , Mike. Our thought are with Connie, my sister Gloria's best friend and the family.
