Michael E. Rooney, a native of New Orleans, passed away on Friday, June 15, 2018 at the age of 62. He was the son of Virginia "Sue" Fucich Rooney and the late Maurice "Moe" Edward Rooney; brother of Peggy Elizabeth Rooney and Donald James Rooney (Sara Guerra); uncle of Erin McLean (Dr. Justin) and Kelly Pearsall (Russell); great uncle of Harper and Logan McLean. Michael attended St. Matthias and St. Pius X Schools and graduated from De La Salle High School. He received a Bachelor of Science from L.S.U. in Baton Rouge. He taught and coached at Kehoe - France School and Camp in Metairie for 35 years. He also coached at numerous playgrounds in Jefferson Parish. He enjoyed photography, computers, and astrology. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Memorial Mass at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans (in Metairie Cemetery) on Saturday, June 30, 2018 at 2:00PM. A visitation will be held at the funeral home beginning at 12 noon. Interment will be private. Mr. Rooney was one of the most influential teachers I had growing up. I thoroughly remember his algebra and science classes in 8th grade and how it has influenced me to be the person I am today. Condolences to the family and to Kehoe-France for losing such a great individual.

Mike and I taught together for four years at Kehoe-France. As a colleague he was professional and hardworking. As a friend he was unselfish and caring. The lessons he taught extended beyond math, science, and computers. He was a coach on and off the court. May he rest in peace.

What a loss ! Having worked with Michael some of those 35 years, I remember him as always smiling, ready to help out, and so good with the students. What a role model for all educators and sports coaches. Mike will be missed by so many. Condolences to his family.

Mr. Rooney was my teacher in eighth grade; he taught science and math. He taught me language of software, algebra, and science.

Mr. Rooney was also my camp counselor and mentor, when I became a camp counselor and group leader in camp.

The teacher of algebra in high school proposed alternative methods to solutions, since I was too familiar with solutions necessary to be successful in high school. as Mr. Rooney taught algebra well.

Mr. Rooney always welcomed me, when I visited the campus; I am an old student.

Mr. Rooney approached students as if they would, and likely, think for themselves. He loved science....

And, very unlikely, yet remembered, I was able to "shoot hoops" with Mr. Rooney.
