Michel Bertucci Obituary

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at a 1:00 PM Mass of Christian Burial in Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette for Michel "Mike" Franz Bertucci, 65, who died on Friday, October 13, 2017 in Lafayette. Interment will be in the St John Cemetery. Monsignor Richard Greene will be the Celebrant of the funeral Mass. Beloved father and grandfather, Mike was born in Poplarville, Mississippi on May 7, 1952. He is preceded in death by his parents Dr. Emile A. Bertucci, Jr. and Mrs. Shirley Lee Johnson Bertucci. He is the brother of the late Cheryl Ann Bertucci, the late Ronald Stephen Bertucci, Dr. Gregory Emile Bertucci, Emile A. Bertucci III and wife Laura Lee LeBouef, Dr. Bryan Johnson Bertucci and wife Ruth Marjorie Frey, Leonard Joseph Bertucci and wife Mary Francis Helm, Celeste Bertucci McShane, Dr. Philip Lee Bertucci and wife Carol Ann Ferguson, and Barbara Ann Bertucci. He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter Dr. Elizabeth Bertucci Robertson and husband Andrew Robertson, his daughter Rebecca Bertucci Laborde and husband Ashton Laborde, his son John Barret Bertucci, and his son Dr. Michael Eaves Bertucci. After leaving Poplarville, the family moved to Lutcher and then to New Orleans where Mike attended Christian Brothers grade school. He later graduated from De La Salle High School in New Orleans in 1970. He then earned degrees in both History and Political Science from Tulane University. He received a Juris Doctor (JD) and an MBA from Tulane University. The Bertucci family enjoyed their summer retreat, Tidewater, in Kiln, Mississippi where multiple generations enjoyed family fun in nature including fishing in the lagoon, swimming, tennis and boating on the bayou. Mike enjoyed kayaking coastal creeks in Mississippi and Florida with his two sons, Barret and Michael, and spending time swimming with his grandchildren. He was known to frequent Bendel Gardens and Greenbriar neighborhoods in Lafayette pedaling full speed on his bicycle with his sweat band fully engaged. He was known endearingly by colleagues, family and friends for his thorough and thoughtful emails and letters. Mike was an exceptional oil and gas attorney in Lafayette where he assisted clients through multiple oil basins across the southern United States. He was awarded the Louisiana Association of Petroleum Landmen Outstanding Member in 1991. "Pop Pop" was the ever proud grandfather of his grandchildren Sam and Britton Robertson of Lafayette and Shelley, Cliffe, and Marshall Laborde of New Orleans. Nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with children, especially his grandchildren. He had a playful nature and had a unique way of connecting with them and making them feel special. He volunteered weekly at the Bridge Christian Ministry of Acadiana for 7 years where he tutored children in school and Christian life lessons. A life-long Christian, his life was driven by his devotion to Christ. He was most recently a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. He was devoted to his prayer breakfast group that met once per week for 21 years every Tuesday morning. His family and friends were surely the beneficiary of his constant prayers and solid convictions. His unselfish ways, soothing counsel, and contagious laugh uplifted all of those around him. Mike was known to always have a verse of scripture ready to share. One of those verses was "We have received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, 'ABBA! Father!' The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God." (Romans 8:15-16) Thank you Pop Pop for sharing your life with us and please continue to pray for us. We know you are with your Father, ABBA in Heaven. The family requests that visitation be observed at Martin & Castille's DOWNTOWN location on Tuesday from 9:30 am until time of service. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish to make a contribution may do so to the Bridge Ministry of Acadiana, P.O. Box 62029 Lafayette, LA 70596. Mike was always uplifting in any situation he faced. He was not only my brother but one of my best friends. We shared phone calls and most lasted an hour. He was always concerned about others first, and was always willing to lend a hand with his spiritual guidance, his family values, and his knowledge of the law. He had a knack for finding some humor even in the most difficult of situations and often sent something to lighten the pressures that seem to show up at the most unoportune time. We will miss our brother, our friend, and our spiritual advisor. What a great example for us all to aspire to.

I enjoyed Andrew's remarks at the service about Mike's playful spirit. Mike knew my husband also loved biking and stopped by the house one day to see if he "could come out and play." I would always have a few laughs when I would see Mike. God bless.

My sincere condolences to Mike's family. I had not seen Mike in many years, but knew him when about 150 youngsters took a six-week European tour in the summer of 1969, seeing several countries and studying their governments, customs, etc. Mike was our student council president. I have many fond memories of that trip, and vividly remember him!
