Oje Gerrel Smith

1975 - 2022

Oje Gerrel Smith entered into rest on March 26, 2022 at the age of 47. He was born March 18, 1975 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Andy and Phyllis M. George Smith. He graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1994. Early in life, Oje fell in love with Kenya "Candy" Sentino and their beautiful union blessed them with 3 girls, Oja, Zyria and Kayla, and a granddaughter, J'Ream Sentino- Hayes. Oje was a member of Central City Fellowship Church and participated in various community organizations throughout his life. His interests included spending time with family, watching the Cowboys play, and playing dominoes with his boys. He had a loving and devoted mom as well as adopted ones, because all of his friends' moms loved "J-Boy". Oje devoted all of his time, life, and energy into his girls. He also enjoyed being a father figure to any child he came into contact with. Oje is survived by 3 brothers, Rodney (Kimberly) Smith, Donald Smith and Antwine Smith Sr., (Tonia Smith); 1 sister, Angela Isla, uncles Jules George (Jackie George), and Samuel George; aunts Dillis George, Dessie Smith and Ann George, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Oje also leaves to mourn: the entire community of Press Park, and his only mother-in-law Leola Sentino. He will be truly missed. Preceded in death by his parents Andy "Deke" Smith and Phyllis M. G. Smith, grandparents Rev. Theodore W. George and Rev. Mother Anna M. George, LC Smith and Floree' Smith; his brothers Shawn Smith Sr. and Andy Smith Jr., uncles Lloyd George, Adam George and Jessie Smith; and nephew Kendall Faibvre. Family, friends and coworkers of Tulane University and Tulane School of Medicine are invited to attend the Homegoing Celebration on Friday, April 8, 2022 for 10:00 a.m. at Next Generation of Original Morning Star Full Gospel Baptist Church, 3536 Saint Ferdinand St., New Orleans, LA. 70126. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Providence Memorial Park Cemetery, Metairie, LA. Due to COVID-19, all attendees are required to wear face masks.
