Paul Marquis Obituary

Paul Joseph Marquis, age 77 years, died peacefully at his home on Sept. 24, 2024. He was the treasured husband of Anna Therese Smyke. He was the son of the late Helen McAuliffe Marquis and Charles F. Marquis. Brother of Charles K. Marquis and the late Robert E. Marquis. He is survived by two daughters, Estalyn (Khari D. Martin) of Los Angeles, CA and Willa (Shirag K. Shemmassian) of San Diego, CA, and one son, Andrew (Danielle D. Donovan) of Brooklyn, NY. He had four wonderful grandchildren: Oberon and Lucinda Martin, Kami and Melik Shemmassian. He is also survived by 19 nieces and nephews and was preceded in death by one nephew. Dr. Marquis worked over 50 years caring for patients young and old in New York, North Carolina, South Dakota, and San Diego. Most of his career was spent at Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, LA as a family practice doctor. He served on medical missions to Nicaragua, Niger, Nigeria, and Haiti. In recent years he volunteered at Scripps Green Hospital. His ability to bring healing and comfort to people was a source of joy throughout his life. Dr. Marquis moved to San Diego six years ago after residing in New Orleans since 1987. He loved running and completed his last half marathon in December 2023. He was an avid pickleballer and hiker, particularly enjoying Mission Trails and Torrey Pines. The family would like to thank Aaron M. Miller, MD, and Holly Anguiano, LCSW for their thoughtful care. A Celebration of Life will take place at The Point, 1010 Santa Clara Place, San Diego, CA 92109 on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Sante Total (santetotal.org), a group Paul worked with providing medical services in Haiti.

Paul and I were neighbors in north wilkesboro Nc. We played a lot of tennis in the foot hills of the mountains. Paul took my wife and I hikeing and camping in the lynville gorge. Which was disastrous. Paul and I flew a lot of frisbee. He loved Fleetwood Mac and Bruce Springsteen. He was nicknamed the doctor from chicken city. Had a lot of enlightening moments rip

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Dr. Marquis. He was the first doctor I worked with at Oschner Dr Marquis, Theresa and I were 3 musketeers. Always kind and respectful to his staff. Such a good man. I´m really sad to hear about this. I am also thankful how he took care of my father.
