Peter Mayer Obituary

Peter Arno Mayer passed away peacefully at his home in New Orleans on July 14, 2016 surrounded by his adoring family. He was born in 1929 in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Germany, and as a 6-year-old refugee, he settled with his mother and father in New Orleans in 1935. He fled Nazi Germany not able to speak a word of English. His life is the definition of the American dream come true. He was educated in New Orleans public schools and later at the University of Missouri's School of Journalism, where he earned the nickname "Junior" as the youngest member of the Alpha Epsilon Phi fraternity. He was in charge of the goat mascot. After a brief service in the U.S. Air Force, he started his career in the Circulation Department of The Times-Picayune, later joining the Fitzgerald Advertising company and then the Walker Saussy Advertising agency. With the help of Dorothea "Dot" Cahn, he started Peter Mayer Advertising in 1967. His talent, wit, charm, unbridled optimism and strong ethics helped his agency grow to one of the largest in the state, and later, the Gulf South. He was a loving husband to Linda Bailey Mayer and previously to Tamara Bernstein Mayer; brother to Ann Levin of Los Angeles, California; father to Mark, Eric and Josh Mayer and father-in-law to Mindy Mayer, Isabelle Mayer and Jill Dupre; grandfather to Allison Mayer, James Mayer, Tom Mayer, Sam Mayer, Eleanor Mayer, Dan Mayer, Mathilda Mayer and Mose Mayer; and a father figure to Perry Pfister. Peter always found time to give encouragement and energy to worthy causes: WYES, The Vieux Carré Commission, LSU Manship School of Mass Communication, The United Way, The Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans and The Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, to name but a few. He served as Adjunct Professor of Advertising at Loyola University. He always took time to meet with and encourage young people trying to launch a career in marketing. For many years, he held court on the sidewalk of Camp Street smoking a cigar after lunch in a director's chair. He had conversations with all who passed by and always saw the best in people and situations. It was said that he didn't have a bad day in his life. On weekends, he was often found at his cabin on the pond in Lumberton, Mississippi, feeding birds, catching fish and cursing beavers. Anyone who knew Peter was lucky to be regaled with exaggerated stories of exotic foods, foreign travel, fishing conquests and the newest jokes. His special gift was always finding the humor in any situation. He considered himself lucky to have been given such a blessed and charmed life. He loved bow ties, WW2 history, reading, sushi, spumoni, chicken feet, politics and the company of his family and many friends - especially during the Jewish Holidays. To say that food was important to his life would be an understatement. He looked forward to three things every day: where to have lunch, whom to have lunch with and what to order. He was a member of the International Wine & Food Society, "Societe des Escargots de Orleanais," a men's culinary club, and the long-standing Friday Lunch group. He was also a regular for breakfast for 40 years at the Commerce Restaurant. He delighted in being the first to try a new restaurant. He had a thing for unusual hats. In 1982, he was awarded the New Orleans Ad Club's Silver Medal Award. In 1994, he was inducted into the Louisiana Broadcasters Hall of Fame. He was honored as a YLC Role Model in 1996. He was co-chairman of the United Way annual fund drive in 1999. He was featured in the 2009 book How They Did It: Profiles of New Orleans Entrepreneurs. There will be a visitation at 9am and funeral service at 10:15am at Touro Synagogue, 4238 St. Charles Ave. New Orleans, La. Afterwards, there will be a private graveside service and interment at Hebrew Rest #3. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to WYES or The Jewish Endowment Foundation of Louisiana. I served with Peter Arno Mayer in the U. S. Airforce, Barksdale AFB, Shreveport, La in the early 1950's. His creativity and good humor were very evident and we knew he was going to do great in his post service undertakings.

I worked for Peter for two summers while in college. I quickly came to love him. His optimism was truly infectious. He will be missed by so many people who had the good fortune to cross paths with him.

August 9, 2016

I had the pleasure of working for Peter for a few years in the late 1980's. Those years remain among my fondest memories of my advertising career. He made this displaced yankee feel a part of New Orleans. Thank you, Peter.

What a gentleman and a great man. His kindness was contagious. He taught me how to eat sushi the right way (with your hands, not chopsticks!) and welcomed me at lunches with advertising greats. Upon returning to my WYES career after a decade of absence, I was privileged again to be in his presence over a delicious meal. It was delightful to hear him rave about his peppermint tea! How will we know what to order at Kim Sum? Many tries, I hope and remembering Peter.

The first time I saw Mr. Mayer at Cafe Reconcile, where he was a regular patron, I recognized him and introduced myself as George Rhode III's daughter. That warm smile emerged as he asked "How's Dusty?" My dad is 85 and he and Mr. Mayer go back over 50 years. As dining room manager at Cafe Reconcile I would like to offer the prayers of our entire organization for Mr. Mayer and his loving family. We were blessed to have known him, he will be missed.

July 21, 2016

My deepest condolences to you all. I treasured Peter's friendship and counsel for over 49 years. And now I'll treasure his memory, as will so many, many others.

The world was always a better place when seen through Peter's eyes. I'm fairly certain that by now he has introduced God to turkey necks. Show 'em how it's done, Pete!

It was an honor to work as an Intern in your Creative Department as it was an honor to have it on my resume. I used to love telling my friends and colleagues I interned at Peter A Mayer Advertising Agency, the largest agency in Louisiana! I also loved the way your Dad would wave at me as I drove down Camp Street with a friendly honk. As someone in this Guest Book said, "Camp Street won't be the same!" I also want to add that the Whitney Bank commercials always made me proud to be a New Orleanian. Great job with that ad campaign as well as so many others. We were all truly blessed! Josh and Jill, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your entire family.

What a man. He was the first person I ever interviewed with, when I was a college student at Tulane and he set me on what has been a lifelong career in advertising and marketing. It was always a joy to hear his voice when I visited PMA on business over the years. He set the standard for a great business and a great place to work.

He was one-of-a-kind in a generation filled with exemplary individuals. We were lucky to know him and New Orleans was lucky to call him its own.

To the Mayer family and the Peter Mayer family, please accept my deepest sympathies.

One of my first days working at the agency was Peter's 80th birthday party. It was plain to see, even to a newbie, how much he loved his family, employees, and life in general. He may be gone, but I know his work ethic and free spirit still live on at the agency that bears his name. Josh and Mark, I'm so sorry for your loss.

Born and raised in Westwego, La. Peter A. Mayer Advertising was my first job in the city. How blessed could one person be. He, along with his staff at the time, molded me and taught me so much, I have carried all of them with me during my entire life. My mother told every company (which were numerous) that I may have a good job now but the best job ever was working for Peter A. Mayer. What a grand man! Love you all and condolences to all who shared his life.

For years, Peter held an annual agency party at his wonderful camp in Lumberton. At one of these, my then-young son - with help from Peter - fished for the very first time. He loved it. On Monday morning, I arrived at work and found a fishing reel on my desk with a note that read, "Now buy that kid a rod."

Love you, Pete. Hope you are fishing and laughing up in heaven right now. I'm pretty sure you are!

Dear Mayer Family. I was Mu Deuteron 1954. I don't remember Peter all that well from those days but did enjoy interacting with him at several reunions. My wife is German and she got a kick out of Peter addressing her in their native tongue. Peter impressed me as a smart and charming man and fraternity brother. Very sincerest condolences on his passing. Mort Lindner.

I was blessed to have Peter in my professional life for 10 years. I will never forget when, at one of our weekly Whitney Bank marketing meetings, Peter [sitting at the head of the conference table, of course!] pulled a metal extendable fork out of his pocket and reached for the fruit platter in the center of the table......and then he gave that fork to me -- I still have it!

In another of these routine meetings Peter asked me "What's wrong....are you pregnant?" ---YES I was, but had not announced it to my boss yet.....no worries, Peter handled it... She was in that meeting!!!!

What a beautiful, warm-hearted, loving spirit he was.....now he is an angel with a bow tie!!!!

I will always love you Peter.

Peter was everything that's right about New Orleans. I loved working at the ad agency. The sidewalk at 324 Camp Street will never be the same. Right now in the afterlife, he's probably showing some guy from Kansas how to eat a softshell crab. God bless you, Peter.

July 17, 2016

My Dad, George Mayoral, the 'M' in WJMR greatly respected Peter's opinions. Dad was one of his luncheon friends who had to accept Peter's straight talk. George Mayoral was glad to be admitted to the Broadcaster's Hall of fame with Peter. I have sympathy with the sons and family. I think of our dads are still discussing advertising topics of the day.

July 17, 2016

Peter, Frank DeSilva and I had lunch almost monthly back in the 80s and 90s. It was a lunch that I always looked forward to attending. Peter always had a new joke for us every month. Our favorite place was Kim Son on the Westbank but we went everywhere.
I miss those days with him. He was one of a kind that we will never see again. I feel so privileged to have known and dined with him for over 20 years. God speed Peter. We will miss you.

Mark, Josh, and Eric,
Many years have passed since Mark and I graduated from Newman. But I still remember visits to your home as a child, how witty your dad was even then, and, as we grew up, how his great personality shined in each of you. I am so very sorry for your loss and hope that soon you reflect on his life, his love, and smile. I wish y'all well.

Many treasured childhood memories of Mr. Mayer's warm welcomes, him regaling us with tall tales, his bemusement when I didn't get his jokes, and him forgiving insensitive teen pranks. They don't make them like your dad anymore, Josh, he was one in a trillion. Deepest condolences to you and all the family. I feel blessed to have known him.

Peter & I first met around the dinner table at the uptown home of Linda & Albert Mintz. Charismatic, charming, and armed with a wicked sense of humor, he & I verbally jousted through the entire evening.

Linda had invited him along to give us his feedback on an anthology of romantic poetry we'd recently recorded to CD. His input was insightful, compassionate, and on-point. Pretty much the same way he treated everyone who ever worked for him, under him, or alongside him. True 'dat.

Linda, Josh, Eric, Mark & family, may the Great Spirit bring you comfort, solace & peace. And on behalf of all New Orleans and the grieving ad community - thanks for giving us Peter.

With Love & Respect....

July 16, 2016

My heartfelt condolences go out to the entire Mayer family. I was an intern in the early 90s and can remember Peter lighting up the room with his contagious laughter and a twinkle in his eye. Once, after winning a big account, he asked me if I had helped on the pitch. I replied my contribution had been making color copies for the presentation. He smiled his great smile at me and said, with complete sincerity, "well that counts, darlin'!" May he rest in peace.

Sarah Scoggin

July 16, 2016

He had the classiest Ad Agency ever! As a Radio rep I loved dealing with everyone there and that's a direct reflection on Peter's class! Everything comes from the top down, every time. Great man! Sarah

July 16, 2016

Linda, Mark, Josh and all the Mayer family,
I'm so grateful Peter was in my life. He truly lived life to the fullest: always interested in everything around him; enjoying hearing a good joke almost as much as telling one; perpetually planning the next great meal or trip.... He maintained a boyish enthusiasm so rare in a man his age. I never felt like I was chatting with a grandpa, more like being regaled by my most fascinating, storytelling uncle. But he was also very kind. To us, the PMers, and to passing people on Camp Street. And he was so proud of his sons and grandchildren. When he was still driving, he'd see me waiting for the bus and insist on giving me a ride home. He'd tell me marvelous stories about my own Uptown neighborhood. I know you all have fond memories of him; one of my fondest is the time I returned the favor, giving him a ride home from the holiday party. Josh kissed him as he got into my car, and I thought: I hope my children love me that much. I'm so sorry for your loss, and ours. Much love, Patti Stallard

Garland Robinette

July 16, 2016

From Garland: I traveled the world with Peter. It always amazed me regardless of whether we were in Asia, Europe, or South America, local people always got caught in the wake of "Peter Smiles". Invariably, we got invited into homes and businesses no tourist ever see. Who today could do what Peter did after arriving in the country unable to speak the language and very few resources to help pave the way. Could we build an incredible company and create a family where all members worshiped us? Peter not only lived the American dream, he put a big smile on the dream. If we have multiple lives, I hope I come back as Peter Mayer. Life can't get any better than that. Unfortunately, the "broadcast thing" Monday starts at 10, but know I'll thinking of Peter. July 15, 2016

The day Peter Mayer opened his advertising agency, he set in motion a chain of events that would change thousands of lives. I count myself among the privileged many who will forever be in his debt. Under the roof of the agency that bears his name, careers were launched, mettle was tested, creativity was fostered, businesses were built up, and lifelong friendships were forged. The mark he made on this city and its people through his work and example is too big to fathom and too vast to measure, but anyone who got to meet him is a better person for it. Rest in peace, Pete. I'm sure glad my path had a chance to cross yours.

Lori Archer-Smith

July 15, 2016

Mark, Eric, Josh, Linda and family:

When I was 22 or 23 and new to New Orleans, a man stopped me in front of the agency right after work and told me he'd been robbed and needed money for a bus ticket to Alexandria. I had no cash, and I actually stepped back into the building, got Peter and told him what the man said. I'm sure Peter was amused by my naïveté, but before I knew it, we were all climbing into Peter's car and heading for the bus station. Peter bought him a ticket, probably knowing full well the guy didn't have any intentions of getting on a bus. I never knew if he did or if he didn't, and I've been racking my brain for years trying to figure out exactly what this event says about Peter. I think it says more than he was kind. I think it didn't matter to Peter what the guy did with the ticket - what mattered more was what HE did. Anyway, memories like these are why for 33 years I've been proud to say I work at Peter Mayer.

My love to you all,
Lori

July 15, 2016

I never had the privilege of meeting Peter. But I feel I knew him well through his son, Josh. It is clear to see that Josh could never have become the man he is, generous, kind, thoughtful, and giving, full of happiness and peace, without the guidance of a wonderful father and a supportive family. On this sad day, I extend my deepest sorrows to Josh, Jill, and all the Mayer family, and hope they find solace in the thought I learned when my own father passed: the good they did lives on in the way those they touched carry themselves.

Josh / Mark and Fam - I am so sorry to hear this and you have my heartfelt thoughts!

My most vivid memory was the first moment I met him. December 23, 1993 when he wanted to interview me on the recommendation of Lauren Greenberg. It was small chat with ONE question only and if you know Peter it makes total sense. Upon realizing I grew up on the Westbank he ask "name the three best restaurants on the Westbank". Apparently I nailed it, which if you know me isn't a shock either. Kelsey's, Le Chateau and the gas station converted to Salvadorian - Pupuseria Divino Corazon. Sadly none of them are here anymore either.

Heather Chiasson (former media buyer). I loved chatting with Pete as he sat outside the building having a cigar as I walked back from lunch. He always made me smile.

El Gran Peter! Well, I guess the party up there got better when you arrived. The 2 years I spent at PAM were some of the best in my career. Thank you so much for the opportunity. Mark, Josh, Eric and family, so sorry for your loss. Sending tons of strength and support from Puerto Rico. Peter, descansa en paz.

Peter influenced my career in so many ways. He was my model of integrity and professionalism, of course, but he was also someone I called upon for advice. A thousand years ago I was offered a job and went to Peter for counsel. Wise counsel it was and thus he shaped my success.

Everything wonderful said or written about Peter is true. But more than the words are the lives he touched. His is a legacy of generosity seeped in wit.

I will miss you, Peter.
