Petros Demarinis Obituary

Petros Demarinis passed away on Monday Jan. 5, 2015. He was preceded in death by his mother Kalliope Zouloufou Karagiannis and sister Xaroula. He is survived by his wife Eleftheria Zoe Mantikos Demarinis, daughters Kalliope (Kelly) Mullins and Paraskevi (Vivian) Haik, sisters Niki and Despina, brothers Sakelaris, Nikos, George Karagiannis and two grandchildren Michael and Eli Mullins, son in law Mark Mullins and Jeffrey O'Hara. He was born in Rhodes Greece and moved to New Orleans in 1970. Over the past 45 years he has been a Chanter in the Greek Orthodox Holy Trinity Church. He served as chairman of the Greek Festival for 15 years and was instrumental in helping the festival grow into one of the most beloved festivals in New Orleans. He spent years working at the Royal Sonesta Hotel and East Jefferson General Hospital. He taught formal Greek School classes out of his home for 30 years to anyone interested in learning about Greek culture, history and how to read and write Greek. He was deeply passionate about Greek culture and the Orthodox church. He was a motivated educator and balanced it all perfectly with the art of enjoying life itself. In 2013 Petros was awarded The Archangel Gabriel Award by His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios in Atlanta GA recognizing his service in the Greek community as a "living example of the Orthodox Christian life and journey to Theosis." Family and Friends are invited to attend visitation on Friday Jan. 9 from 9am-11am at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1200 Robert E. Lee Boulevard New Orleans. Funeral service to follow at 11am. Entombment will follow in St. Louis No. 3, New Orleans. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1200 Robert E. I couldn't believe it when Alexandra told me of Mr. Petros' passing. I was shocked and can only imagine the loss the Cathedral and whole New Orleans community is feeling. He was my Greek school teacher and we had some good laughs together. What a presence he had. Kuria Eleftheria, Popi, and Vivi, I am truly sorry for your loss and hope that your memories keep you smiling. And know that Mr. Petros is dancing with Aunt Stella. With love and a big hug, Eleni Bitsikas

I just learned of the passing of dear Petro. I remember taking Greek lessons from him as a child. He was so kind. My American mother enjoyed her Greek lessons with him as well and would proudly show off the new words that she learned to my dad when he returned from work at night.

He chanted at both of my parents' funeral services and his beautiful, emotional voice touched me deeply. I will miss him. His dedication and contribution to the Greek community was commendable. May his memory be eternal. My most sincere condolences to the family.

I would like to add this if I may. The words always gave me comfort when I was feeling sad.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there - I do not sleep.
I am the thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints in snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
As you awake with morning's hush
I am the swift-up-flinging rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there - I did not die.

May his Memory be eternal

Thank you for inviting me into your home to enjoy the tradition, spirit, happiness and , most especially, love that surrounded you and your family. I will always remember spending Easter with you and your family - from the wonderful singing and spirituality that midnight brought to the last morsel of lamb or Greek pastry that was served in your home as the sun set.

JESUS CALLED YOUR NAME
You are very loved my dear sweet friend,
we all held out hope till the very end.
You had an amazing life, you can't deny,
but you'll be missed unbelievably, let me tell you why!
For your family and friends,
you were there till the end!
If things went wrong,
you'd sing them a song!
For those who needed saved,
your wisdom you gave!
You were the one,
that could get things done!
For those in need,
you would beg and pled!
But most of all, my favorite part,
for the rest of my life,
you'll be in my heart!

Till we meet again,
REST IN PEACE!
Your friend,
Pam

With the saints give rest, O Christ, to the soul of Thy departed servant, Petro, where there is neither sickness nor sorrow nor sighing, but life everlasting. Amen.

Eleftheria, Popie and Vivi, may God's peace be with you. Cherish the memories you created with him. I will always remember him for his caring and loving nature, the love for his family and his glorious chanting which will never be duplicated. I love you.

I am so lucky to have known you, Mr. Petro. I'll never forget waking up every Saturday morning to attend Greek school classes as a child. You're chanting and deep voice always sounded so echanting to me growing up. The times spent at your house with your family were some of the most memorable times for me. The community won't be the same without you. Love and God Bless. Kalo Taxidi

Theo Petro, I can't believe you're gone, but we will see you again one day. Thea is a very strong woman, and so are the girls, and I think they are going to be okay. You were one of a kind, Theo, and you were an amazing individual. Our cousin wrote an article about you in Greece, and I was able to read it because of you. I always made sure to compliment your beautiful voice, every time I heard you sing, because you sang so well. You were a blessing to know. Almost everyone you taught is posting wonderful stories about you. Out of anyone who has left our community, I think you made the biggest impact. Thank you for being you. Rest in peace, and may your memory be eternal. We ? you Theo.

Petros was a special type of person who devoted his life to his family and his church. He was always willing to help anyone in need and was the first to volunteer to help on any project to benefit our Holy Trinity Cathedral. He used his god given talents to teach, educate and inspire many of our children to learn about their Hellenic faith, heritage and culture. Our deepest condolences to Eleftheria, Popi and Vivi. We all share in your sadness. May his memory be eternal.
