Words cannot convey the sense of surprise and shock I feel having learned of René's passing. René and I shared the same homeroom and English class during our senior year in high school at OPW, and we became friends back then. He was warm and good-natured, and I cannot recall René ever saying an unkind word to or about anyone. He was that type of person. Out of the many people who signed my high-school yearbook, René's farewell comment is the one that I remember most. True to form, his words were encouraging and uplifting.

My condolences to René's family, friends, and loved ones.

Rene attended all the sessions of Parkway Partners' Tree Troopers Training in September 2013 and he demonstrated kindness, gentleness, and thirst for knowledge. Despite his inability to speak at this point in his disease, he would email me questions in the morning that he would like to have addressed in the next class. He also participated in volunteer efforts where he helped straighten trees, despite the fact that he didn't have very much strength. But he seemed to enjoy himself very much and expressed how fulfilling it was to participate.

Everyone at Parkway Partners is very grateful to have crossed paths with such a wonderful man, if only too briefly.

Our condolences go out to his family and friends.

Rene always remembered my birthday. And even though I was almost 50 when I got married, he always remembered my anniversary as well. We met in drama club in 1975, but reconnected at the 25 year reunion. We disagreed on many things, but we never lost respect for each other. He always had time for me whenever I visited New orleans. He was one of my favorite brothers from other mothers and I loved him and will miss him dearly...

Rene has been a great friend for nearly forty years. In particular I became very good friends with Rene when we studied together to get through the economics program we were both in at LSU and I am forever grateful for his hard work and inspiration. He remained a good friend over the years despite each of us going in different directions. I am grateful that Rene and his being and deeply sorry of his passing. RIP Rene.

I didn't know Rene well. We met through my husband, Tom. Rene was & is one of the many threads woven into our lives. Rene was a fiercely loyal New Orleanian and as unique as the city itself -- quirky, eccentric and brooding, yet noble, passionate and genteel. It is hard to believe that he has passed away. Rene lived and died on his own terms. That's just who he was. May he rest in peace and may his family and friends be comforted by one another in this time of grief and great loss.

Rene has been part of our very close knit set of friends of some 37 years. He was the most unique in a group of very unique individuals. More than anything, he was a man of unwavering principle. He loved passionate debate more than anyone I have ever known, but for the fun of it, never inconsiderate in his argument. I loved that he liked to present himself as a calm, cool character, while underneath he boiled with a need to challenge, be challenged, and always be just one of the guys. He is in so many of my stories and memories, that he will always be part of me. Well, he is an irreplaceable, frustratingly intractable, loving, lovable, and now absent friend. I will miss him tremendously. My prayers are with him, his family, and his many friends.

Music, when soft voices die

Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory—
Odours, when sweet violets sicken,
Live within the sense they quicken.

Rose leaves, when the rose is dead,
Are heaped for the beloved's bed;
And so thy thoughts, when thou art gone,
Love itself shall slumber on.

A one if a kind - very kind, intelligent and compassionate individual was Rene', always willing to help with our '76 OPW class reunions; both caring and loving - and stubborn and quirky - we loved him! Just like he was! He will be missed by all of us that were fortunate enough to spend one on one time with him. He possessed a tremendous amount of talent, and we were blessed that he shared it with us. Rene was a dear friend, and will be sorely missed. My deepest condolences to all who loved and cared about him. I hope he is at rest now, and hope we are reunited in Heaven.

I am devastated by the death of my dear friend of nearly forty years and I am saddened that neither of these competing obituaries comes close to revealing what a truly extraordinary person he was. He was fiercely intelligent, witty and erudite, kind and compassionate and in the end perhaps the most courageous person I have ever known. He could be monumentally frustrating at times but he was truer to what he believed than any religious person I heave ever known. Our friendship was one of the great joys of my life and my memories of him will provide happiness for the rest of my life. Rest easy at last my dear friend and know that you are missed now and forever.

You will be so missed, my dear friend. And I will be looking for that white bird.
