Richard Romain Obituary

Richard Noel Romain of Gretna, Louisiana passed away Monday, June 26, 2023 at age 69. He was born April 18, 1954 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Richard graduated from Archbishop Shaw High School in Marrero, LA in 1972. He was a heavily recruited athlete, but ultimately accepted a football scholarship to LSU, where Richard obtained a BA degree in Business Administration, while performing at a high level as a wide receiver for his beloved Fighting Tigers. Promise of a pro career vanished with a career ending knee injury in 1974. Richard's fearlessness and love for new adventures played out when he was cast in the lead role in Cane River, a 1982 American romantic drama film that was rediscovered and re-released in 2013 and beyond. Although he was not a professional actor, Richard was a natural; his screen presence captivating. Richard's 40 year career as a Lead Funeral Director at D. W. Rhodes Funeral Home in New Orleans garnered high praise, recognition and adoration in the GNO community and the region. Richard was beloved. His passion for helping people and orchestrating successful burials brought comfort to families during the toughest of times. Everybody sought out Rhodes' tall, good looking funeral director! Anybody who knows Richard knows he loved to put his hands in dirt and took great pride in his beautiful Zen garden. He yearned to be outside, to feel the sun on his face either fishing or swimming or barbecuing. Richard was a sportsman's sportsman, who tried just about anything, and usually mastered it quickly. His latest quest – golf! Family was everything to Richard; he cherished his sons, his siblings, his lovely girl CoCo and friendships that he collected like art. Richard also had mad love for LSU and a deep connection to his band of Tiger brothers. Family and friends will remember Richard for his big, kind heart, his playful spirit and his leading-man charm that lit up a room. Richard Romain was a steady, solid man and was and will always be loved by so many. Richard is survived by his two sons, Gian and Brandon Romain; his siblings Leslie R. Chauvin (Ralph), his twin Julie A. Romain, Inez R. (Roy) Glapion, Paul G. (Amyre) Romain; his dear and loving companion, Corine Porche; nieces Allyson Chauvin, Ingrid P. Alonge, Lauren and Alexandria Patin; nephews Raoul 'Dutch' Chauvin, Dillon and Dalton Glapion, countless friends and colleagues. He was one of seven children from the union of the late Edwin P. Romain, Sr. and Myra M. Romain. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Edwin P. Romain, Jr. (Dr. Wilfred Delphin) and Simone R. Newman. Special thank you to his LSU family, the 4 R's, his Rhodes family and staff and the City of Gretna. Relatives and friends of the family, pastors, officers and members as well as priest and parishioners of all Greater New Orleans Churches, Death Care Leaders of Louisiana, Alumni of LSU and Archbishop Shaw High School are invited to attend a Visitation from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Rhodes Chapel, 3933 Washington Ave., New Orleans, LA on Wednesday, July 5, 2023 followed by a Celebration of Life at 5:00 pm. On Thursday, July 6, 2023, a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 924 Monroe St., Gretna, LA (corner of Franklin and Burmaster St.) at 12:00 noon. I recently returned from a trip to Louisiana where I visited Nachitoches and Melrose Plantation where the movie, Cane River, that Richard Romain starred in, was filmed. I made the tour guides aware of the film and watched it again with my family. All were delighted with it and needless to say, Richard gained some new fans on that trip!
I thank Mr. Romain for his wonderful legacy and for being the great guy he was to all who knew him. I only wish I had had a chance to meet him and to see him in part 2 of that memorable film.
Continuing prayers of peace and comfort to his family and
friends.

It was a shock hearing of Richard's passing. I remember the genuine kindness he showed me during our years at LSU. The Student's Union, Parade Ground, The Quadrangle & Middleton Library to name a few places Richard shared with us will always be fondly though of. His smile, laughter & wit kept us in stitches during those days. Richard Romain will ALWAYS be lovingly though of by many. "Gone But Never Forgotten"

Hearing of Richard's passing was surprised that saddens me more than I can possibly express. We met during my freshman year at Archbishop Blenk High School during open house during my sophomore year. He was kind, funny, extremely athletic and all of the girls had a big crush on him. He was movie star handsome yet he had no idea. Richard's star quality extended beyond his looks and his athleticism on the football field. He was a star became of his compassion for others which he exhibited daily in his profession. I extend my heartfelt condolences to Richard's family and friends, especially my fellow Blenk alumnus, Julie Romain. I pray that our Heavenly Father will give you peace beyond all understanding.

I was so sorry to hear that Mr. Romain passed. I do not reside in New Orleans. but am a native New Orleanean. I am also so proud to have met Mr. Romain because he funeralized my mother, Mrs. Beaulah Davis (1999) and father Joseph Davis (1989. I now live in California, but was there this month for the funeral of my friend's sister, who was funeralized by Rhodes. I remembered Mr. Romain and how professional and comforting he was during the grieving process of my parents. I asked one Rhodes employee about him and was informed he had passed a few months ago. I was shocked and hurt to hear of his passing, and had I known...would have definitely come to his service just to show how much I appreciated his sincerity. He will surely be missed, May he Rest In Peace, and I can surely say as a witness to the way he did his job as a Funeral Director "JOB WELL DONE",,,,Mr. Romain.

Richard Romain was a true athlete bar none. Knowing Richard from CYO sports days until his presence at Archbishop Shaw High School was felt on the football team, basketball team and the track team. I played many a pick up basketball game with Richard after our `72 Shaw graduation at St. Joseph´s gym in Gretna and a pick up basketball game at my home in Marrero which featured a young Rick Roby, who just graduated from Brother Martin and went on to Kentucky and the Boston Celtics. Richard loved life and his strong sense of family. Once when several Shaw graduates got together in New Orleans, "Ro" made it a point to show up and share memories with Darryl Hymel, Don McCloskey and Kevin Hotard. Until we meet again my friend, keep those golf scores honest up there my brother!!!!

Had the privilege to become very close to Richard as freshman football players at LSU. I loved throwing a football to Ro. He could make a qb look really good with his amazing hands. We were very close through our football years and maintained contact through the years. I often would speak of Richard Romain as the nicest, coolest guy I had ever met. Kind always and when you were around him you didn´t want to leave. I´ll miss Ro but I am confident we will pick back up in eternity. Until then, lots of good memories and blessings are mine in knowing Richard Romain, a special friend to so many. God bless the Romain family and may the peace of Jesus Christ reign in their homes.

But this I call to mind,
and therefore I have hope:

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases,
his mercies never come to an end;

great is thy faithfulness.
"The Lord is my portion," says my soul,
