Rita Swanner Obituary

Rita Mae Hewson Swanner passed away peacefully on December 21, 2020, at age 88. She was born on May 28, 1932, to Vera and Leo Hewson. Rita met the love of her life, Al Swanner, while still in high school at St. Mary's Dominican. Rita and Al married in New Orleans, where they lived for many years before moving first to Metairie and then to Chateau Estates, in Kenner, where they have lived for almost 30 years. They recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary. Rita had four adoring children: Michael Swanner (Lori), Susan Swanner (Scott), Laure Walsh (Jim), and Holly Jarrett (Keith). She was a wonderful grandmother of 13 (Melissa, Michelle, Mike, Patrick, Amanda, Ali Mae, Jamie, Kelsey, Zachary, Sarah, Chet, Hunt, and Kim), and a great grandmother of 10 (Nick, Mia, Stephen, Reagan, Madison, McKinley, Hailey, Adam, Connor, and Davis). Rita is survived by her beloved brother, David Hewson (Marilyn). Rita dedicated her entire life to her family. She was a devoted wife, a wonderful and loving mother and grandmother, and a fabulous cook! She enjoyed gardening, and especially loved flowers and birds. She liked to read, decorate, and play Scrabble, and she enjoyed spending time with her many wonderful friends. She loved to travel and felt fortunate to have seen much of the world. She planned many fun family vacations with children and grandchildren in tow. Rita loved the Gulf Coast and the many holidays and weekends spent with extended family on Bayou Coco and then Pass Christian in the early years, and Ocean Springs the last 29. Rita was kind and gentle, elegant and gracious. She will remain in our hearts forever. She will be sorely missed. The family appreciates the effort and loving care she received from Liz, Mary, and Natalie, as well as all the love and attention from the Chateau CC family. Due to current health concerns, there will be a private mass celebrated for Rita with only the immediate family. I was blessed to have met Mrs. Rita Mae when I worked for Thrifty Car Rental back in the 80's and good part of the 90's. A very kind, gentle and beautiful lady. My condolences to the entire Swanner family. May she rest in peace!
