Rita Mary Breaux Washington

1923 - 2017

Rita Mary Breaux Washington, age 94, departed this life to her heavenly home on Sunday, August 27, 2017. She was born on April 2, 1923 and was the daughter of Gladys Lindolph and Willie Braud. She was their only child. She was a lifelong resident of New Orleans, La. and grew up in the Uptown area and later in the Carrollton area. Rita attended McDonough #6 Elementary School. She enjoyed playing sports and was very athletic and excelled in basketball, softball and track. She attended Booker T Washington Senior High School. She was one of their first cheerleaders and was in the 3rd graduating class from BTW Senior High. Rita worked at the former New Orleans Furniture Factory. Rita definitely had the talent to open her own bakery. She was known for her great homemade desserts. Everyone who knew Rita was always looking forward to eating some of Rita's delicious desserts. She was a devoted Catholic and a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church for 66 years. After hurricane Katrina she was a member of Saint Maria Goretti Catholic church until her death. She was preceded in death by her parents Gladys and Willie, grandson Dennis Champagne and son Dennis Washington. She leaves behind three children to cherish her memory Sandra D. Stephens, James B. Washington and Denise W. Cousin, six grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. Relatives, friends and members of Holy Ghost Catholic Church, St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, Bethlehem Lutheran Church, USDA National Finance Center, Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, Touro Infirmary Hospital, Preferred Caregiver and Sitters, LLC and Compassus Hospice Palliative Care are invited to attend. A Mass of Christian Burial Celebration at St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 7300 Crowder Blvd N.O .La 70127 on Saturday September 9, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will take place 9:00a.m.- 11:00a.m. Celebrant Monsignor Earl Gauthreaux.
