Monsignor Robert Ignatius Guste obituary

Robert Guste Obituary

GUSTE Monsignor Robert Ignatius Guste, dearly beloved and renowned Roman Catholic evangelist, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, August 3, just after 3 PM. A native son of New Orleans, Louisiana, Monsignor Guste participated in the establishment of the Catholic Charismatic Movement, leading countless missions, retreats and pilgrimages at home, across the U.S., and abroad. In the late 1980's, he established the Living Waters Ministry, offering inspiration, Spirit-filled guidance, comfort and love over the radio with a daily installment. His love for the Lord exuded from a naturally joy-filled disposition, a manly sense of humor and a cheerful love of praise in music. Monsignor Guste was born in New Orleans on October 14, 1926. He attended Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School, then began studies for the priesthood at St. Joseph's Seminary. Ordained a Priest on June 3, 1950, his early administrative assignments included: Federation Chaplain of the Family Life Movement, Director of the Apostleship of Prayer, Assistant Pastor at St. Raphael's Parish, St. Cecilia's Parish, and St. Maurice Parish. He was then appointed Pastor of St. Anthony's Parish in Luling, LA (1964-1973), subsequently serving as Pastor of St. Francis de Sales, a lively inner-city parish from 1973-1982. Father Guste also served as the Regional Director of the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine. Father Guste has been actively engaged in numerous movements for spiritual renewal, including The Cursillo Movement, the Third Order of Mount Carmel, and the Jesus Caritas Fraternity of Priests. Community involvement included work on behalf of interracial justice and correction reform chairing the Criminal Justice Commission of the Louisiana Interchurch Conference. He also devoted much attention to the cause of Respect for Life, participating with zeal in Priests for Life. Early in his career as a Catholic priest, Fr. Guste authored the booklet For Men of Good Will, promoting equality and justice for all. Later, he penned Mary at my Side, sharing with sensitivity the role of the Blessed Mother in his life. In his theological study, The Gift of the Church, Monsignor Guste affirms the need for, the love of, and the meaning of the Catholic Church, and addresses common objections and questions about the Church today. Monsignor Guste is preceded in death by his father, William J. Guste, and his mother, Marie Louise Alciatore Guste. He is survived by his brothers and their wives: William J. Guste, Jr. and Dorothy Schutten Guste, Roy Francis Guste and Beverly Taylor Guste, and Father Jules Guste, founder of the Society of our Mother of Peace. Survivors also include 29 loving nieces and nephews. With deep devotion and affection, he lovingly baptized, married, and cherished every member of his numerous clan. Along with noteworthy accomplishments, "Uncle Bobby" will be lovingly remembered for his powerful booming voice filled with the love of the Holy Spirit, and for his praise in music with his ever-handy trumpet. All are invited to celebrate his entry into "La Vie Eternelle", eternal life with Christ. Visitation will be held at 10 AM Saturday, August 7 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 1908 Short Street. Mass will be held at 1 PM. Arrangements by Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home.

Father Guste was an awesome priest and evangelist whom my husband and I attribute our spiritual conversions back in the 90s. He was definitely on fire with the Holy Spirit that spread to anyone who came into his presence. Please pray for us, Father Bob, as we have not yet reached our final destination.

A true man of God...he followed the ancient Catholic tradition of Nobility...
Though you may be born into a wealthy class; giving yourself to serve the Good Lord by serving God's people, including those well less off than yourself is both a priviledge and a duty. Father Guste would always dedicatedly ;do his best to try to help those who sought his help, no matter what their status in life was. He always knew he was of the house of Alciatoire, no less than Saint Ignatious knew he was of the house of Loyola...

I have wonderful memories of Father Guste from St. Anthony's in Luling. He was there during my grade school years, and gave me first communion at the little old church in Luling. All these many years I've remembered his smile and caring ways. In December of 2009 when my mother passed away, we contacted Father Guste and asked if he would perform her funeral mass and of course he said yes. His words were so comforting to us. What a gift we were given to have known such an inspiring individual.

To the family of Father Guste,
Seeing his name in the death notices was heart breaking to me. I remember him to be a great person and priest that took such interest in the children at St Maurice Parish in the 50's. It seems as if it was yesterday. He was a wonderful role model for us kids. My prayers are with you and your family. God is looking over him and I know that he will be looking over your family and everyone that he came in contact with. I feel greatful to have know him. I never forgot, any of the priest, that have come into my life. I will continue to pray for him; as we lose so many of the good ones. May God grace us with new priest with his good qualities.

Our condolences to Father Guste's family. I will always be grateful for his kindness. Father Guste would visit St. Francis Villa Assisted Living and befriended my dad who lived there. My dad enjoyed their talks. Father Guste visted him late one night, only a couple hours before my dad passed away. He arranged for a deacon to do a non-Catholic service, after offering to do it himself, even though he was set to leave that day on a bus trip to D.C. (He said he'd fly later.) But he still came to the funeral to say some kind words about my dad. It is through Father Guste's kindnesses that we became parishioners of OLPH. Thank you Father Guste. We will miss you.

Our sympathy goes out to the Guste family for the loss of their brother. He was truly a holy man of God. Several of the boys in the family served at the altar under Father Guste at St. Anthony’s of Padua in Luling in the 60’s. When one of the Becnel boys suffered a serious injury in an automobile accident, Father Guste used to faithfully minister to him by coming to the house to bring him the Holy Eucharist. On an altar boy appreciation day, I still recall the time when Father Guste brought all the altar boys to his family’s camp on Frenier Beach on Lake Pontchartrain in St. John the Baptist Parish. He also went fishing with the Becnel boys on the Trinity canal (which is located deep in the swamp on Trinity Plantation in Killona). Since the 60’s, we have not been in close contact; however, he continued to minister via his Living Waters radio program that I would tune into in the mornings on the way to work. One of my favorite remembrances of his program was his recalling a discussion with young students on “What is a Saint”. He said that one student answered that a Saint is those people that the sun comes shining through (referring to stained glass). Father said that this was one of his most favorite answers. This can be said for Father Guste himself as he certainly let the Son of God shine throughout his life and gave an excellent example for all in the community. His spirit will be missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.

I was a student of Father Guste in 1962 when I was preparing for Confirmation in Saint Maurice Parish. He was a very easy going good man of faith. My grandparents also new him from his Saint Cecelia's days. I extend my condolences to Father Guste's family. I also listen to his radio broadcast, "The Living Waters Program," which currently is still airing. Thank you for letting me sign this guest book.

In the name of the Father the Son & the Holy Spirit Heavenly Father, I'm sad b/c the world just lost an Angel but I'm happy b/c the Heavens just received a Saint. From the Father to the Son & from the Son to the Father! Father Monsignor Guste left us with the gift of LOVE in two of the highest forms "Filios" means: the love of a brother & "Agape" means: a giving love and it rained out his voice when he spoke and radiated from his soul, glowing with the Holy Spirit 24/7 " He floated like an Angel & was busyer than a bee, Graceful as a dove, giving his love to anyone who asked. A true "Catholic Warrior" in his faith, fighting evilwith no boundaries. He lived the exsampleof what Christ taught and we all should learn from his life and carry it on to eachother in the name of Jesus Christ I pray that the essence of Msgr. lives on forever to one of the GREATEST priest to ever hold the title Msgr. It would take some a rich Miles to fill those shoes and as much as I already miss him I thank you Lord for the passing of the tourch from one great priest to another. It was truly a gift and a pleasure just to know him and an honor to have him as a role model & hope that I too can follow your footsteps down that narrow path Father Monsignor Guste I will never 4get u thanks for all the Love brother "ALLELUIA" in Jesus Christ name I pray Amen. With Love...LoveLifeLetto

How I will miss Msgr. Guste's presence at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. It was a joy to see him process to the altar, singing a hymn to Jesus and begin the mass with a hearty "Oh, yes!". His homilies were always inspirational, touching, funny and poingnant, gently reminding us of our obligations to each other and to the Lord. He often told us to "close our eyes and picture ourselves at the foot of the cross". I know in my heart that Msgr. Guste is there with the Savior and the Blessed Mother, praying for us now as he always has. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family and friends. He will remain in my constant thoughts and prayers. God Bless you, Monsignor. May the Good Lord grant you eternal rest. May you abide forever in the loving arms of Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior.

Msgr. Guste, I found out about the glory of your passing into Heaven with the Trinity today. I wish I could have attended your funeral. You and your family will be in my prayers. You beat Archbishop Hannan to heaven! Praise the Lord! I will always rember how the Lord used you in so many healings at Charismatic Prayer Meetings. Also, I resided in the old convent on second street with some sisters. We used to go with you to say mass in parishoners homes. I loved your masses and the songs in your heart. How you loved Jesus and Mary and us. We felt God's presence through you. Thanks for being holy and sharing the gifts God gave you with us. Peace and happiness. Now you will be with your Godly friends, Fr. Emile LaFranz, Fr. Harold Cohn, Fr. Whitney. Please talk to Jesus for us and our families. Thanks for everything you've done. We love you.

I will miss Father Guste so much. Even though I no longer saw him he was always in my heart. I learned so much from him as a child that I have carried with me over the years. The last time I saw him was when he celebrated my Godmother's (Dorothy Woodiel) funeral. He hugged me and called me by my first name, and I know I had not seen him many times since he left Luling. I remember him coming across the street from St. Anthony's when I was in elementary school to spend time with us a recess. I remember him laughing and singing with us. I remember a group of us riding our bikes to the rectory on Saturdays to see what he was doing. He was never too busy to talk to all of us, give us a snack, and then tell us to be careful and he loved us. I will miss him so much but know he is in a wonderful place singing, laughing, talking in that booming voice, and enjoying the real presence of our Lord.

August 7, 2010

We thank the Holy Trinity and the Blessed Mother Mary for uplifting Msgr. Bob Guste. Our gift is that we knew one another. We thank many priests and Msgr. Bob Guste for anointing me on my death bed, March 28, 2007, and again in the hospital for my lungs. I'm still alive, thank you Msgr Guste.

The Catholic Church has been favored by the ministry and life of this holy priest, and our friend, Fr. Bob. We enjoyed having lively discussions and bantering about church issues and the scriptures over coffee and biegnets.
Fr. as you look at the face of Jesus, think of us now and then and ask Jesus to keep us and all whom you have touched close to Him.
For Theresa and all of his family, and Fr. Miles and the parishioners of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, you will be in our prayers as you grieve.
With much love,

Monsignor Gus was a spiritual inspiration to my family. He visited my sick husband in the hospital many times. He said the mass at my husband's funeral. My mom loved him-he also visited her and prayed with her at the River Ridge Hospice on Jefferson Hwy in River Ridge.
He said her mass when you left to cross the Rainbow Bridge. I know he is united with his beloved Lord and his faithful parishioners. We lost an icon here and sadly will be missed.

Father, I needed your advice on one more issue. I was hoping for one more smile. I wanted to hear you laugh one more time. I needed a last fatherly hug and a blessing. I had one important thing to tell you. I needed you to hear one more confession. I needed to ask you to forgive me for hurting you. I hoped to hear just one more note on your trumpet. I wanted you to see my new grandchildren. I needed to tell you I love you. But, Father, I turned and now you are gone. Father, forgive me for not being there to pray with you and to tell you goodbye. Godspeed, Father Guste.

To the entire Guste Family:
As we grieve our loss in Monsignor Guste's passing we must also remember his life with us. He was not the ordinary Priest. He talked the Talk, and walked the Walk. He was what every Priest aspired to be, and the Priest every Parishioner wanted for their Parish. He lived for life, and devoted his life to the Almighty. Our thoughts and prayers are with Monsignor Guste and his family in this time of great sorrow. He will be missed. Monsignor Guste will always live in our hearts and prayers.

Msr. Guste was such an inspiration and help to me in finding my way back to Church after the deaths of my mom and brother-in-law. Father Guste was a mentor, a person who believe in pro-life. Even thought I know him for a short time and met him only several times, he will remain to me what God wants all of us to be, a true witness. I wish I could make the funeral but circumstances will not let it happen. My prayers goes out to the family, friends, and clergy who know him. He will be missed in our Catholic and non-Catholic community. Sincerely, Mary McDonald

Monsignor Guste was a champion for the Pro Life movement and will continue his fight for life next to Our Lord.

He always came to the assisted living where my Dad, Leo Sanchez lived to say mass on Saturday. The residents loved him as he never forgot them. He might be running late, but they would wait patiently for him to come saying the rosary in the meantime.

He will be missed by everyone and I am sure his reward will be great in Heaven for a job well done.

God Bless,

Monsignor Guste was a true champion for the unborn. I enjoyed being with him several times at the Washington, DC "March for Life." On one particularly cold day I took a photo of Msgr. Guste who happened to be standing on a patch of ice. I sent it to him and told him it showed him "walking on water." His humility and holiness was apparent and his exortation to fight for the Culture of Life was an inspiration to me, all of the former volunteer staff at ACCESS Pregnancy Center as well as many other advocates for the unborn.

My deepest condolences go out to the family of Father Guste. Oh how I remember him when he was my priest at St. Anthony Parish in the 1960's. I was only a child then but his voice was indeed booming and his heart huge. He was very influential then and always remembered our family when he returned for visits. He was truly a fine example of Catholic doctrine. He will always hold a special place in my heart.

My first wonderful memory of Father Guste is when he was a very young priest at St. Cecilia. While not a large man, he was bigger than life, running across the playground greeting everyone as he rushed to the next task at hand. As I am sure is true with many people, he miraculously appeared in my life thirty years later, when I was in crisis, in a Connecticut town where I was living, offering me solace and wisdom as only he could. It is impossible to be sad that this holy man is now where he belongs enjoying the face of God.

Msgr. Guste has been a wonderful spiritual advisor to all of the Catholic Faith in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. He always spoke with an affection for his ministry and made you feel that he was sharing his love for God and Our Blessed Lady with you. For me, I admired his presence always at Marian conferences, our Magnificat Breakfasts, receiving the sacrament of penance from him, celebrating mass, participating in rosary marches, and many other times. He had a way of sharing God Alive with everyone as he ministered to all as a holy priest and a compassionate man. The last time I spoke to him, I told him that I admired the way in which he had such a great devotion to Mary. His response about her was, "She's great." We are all blessed to have known him and his love of our faith will go on in everyone. I wish to give my condolences to his family during this difficult time of loss. Also, I wish to express an appreciation to his family for sharing such a wonderful and holy priest with all of us. God bless you during this time and always.
