Robert Dean Hoffman Jr.

1954 - 2023

Robert Dean Hoffman, Jr., age 68, passed away on Saturday, August 26, 2023 after suffering sudden cardiac arrest while at home with his fiancée, Eileen Kennedy Byrne. Robert was born in New Orleans on December 15, 1954. Robert graduated from Auburn University in 1975, was awarded his Juris Doctor degree from Loyola University New Orleans in 1978, and earned the Master of Laws in Taxation from Emory University in 1980. Soon after passing the bar, he partnered with Arthur Ballin in 1978 to establish the Ballin & Hoffman law firm. Robert joined Burke & Mayer as a shareholder in 1994 where he spent a decade before opening his own firm in Covington LA. For two decades, he was lead litigator for the Louisiana Tax Commission and has served as general counsel for Seal-Tite International, LLC. Robert was committed to supporting the integrity of the legal profession, serving on the Louisiana Attorney Disciplinary Board, and as a grader of the Louisiana Bar Exam. He was actively engaged in the community, serving on the Board of Trustees of Christ Episcopal School, where his younger children attended school, and twice President of the Board of Tchefuncta Club Estate where Robert and his family lived for almost 20 years. Robert was an enthusiastically supportive father, a basketball and soccer coach to his son's teams and boisterous cheerleader for his daughters' artistic endeavors. Robert was a longtime member of the Over the Mountain Athletic Club (OTMAC). Family members and friends will remember Robert's enthusiasm for collecting art, love of cabernet and travel, passion for music, infectious charisma, Reynolds-ian mustache, and athletic prowess. Robert is survived by his former wife Katherine Thielen Hoffman; daughters, Katherine Hoffman Williams (Justin) and daughter Taylor Ann Hoffman; son, Robert Dean Hoffman III (Holly); and four grandchildren. Robert is also survived by his brothers, Stephen Hoffman (Mary), Michael Hoffman, Richard Hoffman (Diana) and Christopher Hoffman (Stetson), along with a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Dean Hoffman, Sr. and Ruth Ann Wheelehan, and son-in-law, Luke Lakshman Gould. A service honoring Robert's life will be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. in New Orleans on Saturday, September 9, 2023. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. with a service honoring Robert's life immediately following at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International or 18th Ward Sports Club, which provides high-quality, low-cost youth sports programs in New Orleans.
